Full Time Shift Day Work Schedule Summary</p> <p>7:00am - 3:30pm</p> <p>VP Area President Department 00396 - Fleet Services Location Campus City Salt Lake City, UT Type of Recruitment External Posting Pay Rate Range $25.00 - $32.00/h DOE Close Date 08/12/2025 Priority Review Date (Note - Posting may close at any time) Job Summary</p> <p>Performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks on the journeyman level in maintaining, servicing, and repairing all manner of light duty, heavy duty, and other related mechanical equipment. Ensures maximum use and operation from University vehicles through proper service and repair.</p> <p>Responsibilities</p> <p>Performs diagnosis, repairs, and maintenance on heavy equipment or light equipment, or both, depending on assignment and operational needs.</p> <ul> <li>"Light" equipment includes, but is not limited to: police and other passenger cars, pick-ups, tow trucks, vans, ATV and other four-wheelers, small tractors, mowers, snow blowers, accessories, hydraulics. </li><li>"Heavy" equipment includes, but is not limited to: bulldozers, loaders, plows, trucks, hydraulics, accessories. </li><li>Diagnoses mechanical and electrical problems. Reviews vehicle and equipment history files to assist in determining frequency and possible cause of problems. Determines materials and parts required. Repairs, overhauls or replaces all equipment components, including but not limited to, engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, steering, differentials, and hydraulic, electrical, computer, fuel and cooling systems. </li><li>Tunes motors using standard test equipment. Performs safety inspections, and may do emissions tests as required. Replaces defective parts. </li><li>Services equipment with oil, grease and water. Checks and services batteries. Checks and lubricates transmissions and differentials. May change and mount tires. </li><li>Installs accessary lights, and other equipment </li><li>Uses normal hand tools, as well as power tools, and modern test or diagnostic equipment to perform necessary repairs, adjustments, overhaul or component replacement. Keeps current on repair and diagnostic technology by studying repair manuals and other production literature, as well as attending specific schools or classes as required. </li><li>Maintains standard shop records, reflecting amount of time, type of repair, parts used and job orders. Will use a computer to input and retrieve data. </li><li>Performs other duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <p>One day comprehensive examination; successful completion of an approved 4 year, 8,000+ hour accredited apprenticeship program in Automobile Mechanics; and four years of shop experience, two of which are in diesel repair or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); and certification by the State Highway Patrol to perform safety inspections on vehicles, heavy equipment and buses, and by the county to perform emission testing on vehicles, heavy equipment and buses or receive certification within six months of hire required. Licensed by the Environmental Protection Agency to diagnose and repair air conditioning units using the freon recovery system; demonstrated customer service skills; and oral and written communications skills to deal effectively with others also required. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in Diesel repair preferred. Certification for state inspection is accomplished by passing a written test administered by the Utah State Highway Patrol. Certification for emissions is accomplished by completing a 40 hr course and passing of a test using University equipment. Licensing for freon recovery system requires completion of a one day class and passing grade on the written test.</p> <p>Preferences</p> <p>Valid drivers license.</p> <p>Type Benefited Staff Special Instructions Summary Additional Information</p> <p>The University is a participating employer with Utah Retirement Systems ("URS").
