Daily duties might include e-filing motions with the appropriate Kansas court, updating case files, managing discovery of case materials, contacting witnesses, coordinating service of subpoenas and summons, advising attorneys of upcoming deadlines and needs, attending evidentiary hearings, and preparing exhibits and evidence for trial.</p> <p>Working collaboratively in a team environment with a positive, make-it-happen attitude and a willingness to assist others is essential. A successful candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, punctual, and capable of working with a high degree of accuracy. A strong candidate will also be able to demonstrate interest and initiative in improving the work of the Economic Crimes section.</p> <p>PRIMARY DUTIES:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Assist in drafting and filing legal documents (i.e., pleadings, correspondence and other legal documents) in connection with legal proceedings before state and federal courts.</p> </li><li> <p>Collaborates with Victim Rights Coordination Unit in scheduling witnesses to appear and briefing witnesses on court proceedings prior to appearances.</p> </li><li> <p>Coordinates subpoena process by completing the content of subpoenas, obtaining documents needed to accompany subpoenas, and ensuring that subpoenas are served in a timely manner.</p> </li><li> <p>Prepares and maintains case files in both paper and digital form; compiles trial and case information.</p> </li><li> <p>Maintains and updates internal document management system.</p> </li><li> <p>Scans documents for electronic storage and manages record retention process.</p> </li><li> <p>Compiles information and prepares trial notebooks.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists with preparing exhibits.</p> </li><li> <p>Prepares discovery and ensures that discovery is sent to opposing counsel in a timely fashion.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists with various administrative functions including, but not limited to:</p> </li><li> <p>processing incoming and outgoing mail</p> </li><li> <p>answering incoming telephone calls</p> </li><li> <p>filing documents</p> </li><li> <p>office supply maintenance</p> </li><li> <p>photocopying reports</p> </li><li> <p>proofreading documents</p> </li><li> <p>maintaining attorney calendars</p> </li><li> <p>scheduling travel arrangements</p> </li><li> <p>delivering and/or filing documents</p> </li><li> <p>gathering information and assisting the First Assistant Attorney General in preparing regular updates for the Deputy Attorney General and the Attorney General on the section's work and activities.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists other paraprofessionals and Assistant Attorneys General as needed.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists with section projects and reports, which may include data entry and information compilation.</p> </li><li> <p>Travels as needed (funded by OAG) to attend training and/or support the work of the Economic Crimes section. They may not include all job duties performed by employees on this job title, and additional duties may be added.</p> <p>Qualifications</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Legal Assistant, Legal Studies or Paralegal degree or certificate from an ABA accredited school. </li><li>Note: College degree and/or work experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, or legal secretary, as deemed by the Attorney General to be sufficient qualification to perform the assigned work, may be substituted for the required degree or certification. </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Experience in a customer service-oriented work environment. </li><li>Experience with the criminal justice process. </li><li>Experience working with an electronic document management/case management system is strongly preferred. </li><li>Electronic discovery experience. </li></ul> <p>Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements</p> <ul> <li>As a condition of employment, candidate(s) are subject to a pre-employment screening process to include a fingerprint and name-based criminal history records check and reference/background check of past and present employers. The pre-employment screening process will be waived for current OAG personnel who have previously completed the screening requirements. </li><li>In this position, you would be authorized access to private information to the extent necessary to perform the assigned duties. Employees of the OAG are required to protect against unauthorized access to such information, ensure the security and privacy of such information, and disclose any anticipated threats or hazards to such information. Employees must be cautious not to release this information to the public or other individuals, including but not limited to OAG employees who have not been authorized or who do not have a legitimate organizational, departmental, or business need to know. Any questions regarding releasing such information to another person should be directed to the employee's supervisor. </li><li>State of Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate. The successful applicant (even non-residents) must obtain a valid Kansas Certificate of Tax Clearance by accessing the Kansas Department of Revenue's website within 10 days of the date the applicant has been offered the employment position. A Tax Clearance is a comprehensive tax account review to determine and ensure that an individual's account is compliant with all primary Kansas Tax Laws. A Tax Clearance expires every 90 days.
