<p>Position Type:</p> <p>Security/Security - Seasonal</p> <p>Date Posted:</p> <p>7/10/2025</p> <p>Location:</p> <p>Region 12 Schools</p> <p>Date Available:</p> <p>08/20/2025</p> <p>Closing Date:</p> <p>07/23/2025</p> <p>  Additional Information: Show/Hide</p> <p>Position Title: School Resource Officer</p> <p>QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ol> <li> <p>Certified Police Officer or a recently retired State Trooper.</p> </li><li> <p>Experience as the Board and Administration may find appropriate and acceptable.</p> </li></ol> <p>REPORTS TO: The School Resource Officer will report to the Superintendent of Schools at Regional School District 12 and the Washington Resident State Trooper.</p> <p>JOB GOAL: To maintain a safe and secure environment for staff and students by monitoring and patrolling premises and personnel. To assist with developing and implementing law related topics to support the educational efforts of the faculty.</p> <p>PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <ol> <li> <p>Law Enforcement Officer-The School Resource Officer (SRO) shall be a certified Law Enforcement Officer with the authority to enforce State and Local criminal laws and town ordinances. The SRO will make arrests when necessary and assist school officials with the enforcement of Board of Education Policies and Administrative Regulations regarding student conduct. The SRO will take a secondary role with school code of conduct violations and take the lead on all criminal violations. The SRO will serve as a liaison between the Region 12 schools and the Washington, Roxbury and Bridgewater Resident State Trooper Offices. The SRO shall periodically attend and participate in various school functions and build working relationships with the schools' staff, as well as with student and parent groups.</p> </li><li> <p>The School Resource Officer (SRO) should be aware of current research on effective strategies for increasing school safety and assist the school in implementing those research based strategies. The SRO should be involved with crisis and emergency management planning, crime prevention, intervention, and other school planning processes. The SRO should be capable of developing and implementing classes in law related education to support the educational efforts of the faculty. The SRO may be called on to work closely with teachers in designing and presenting law-related topics and the role of the police in our society.</p> </li><li> <p>The School Resource Officer (SRO) shall provide police services at the Region 12 schools, school grounds and areas adjacent to the school. The SRO shall investigate allegations of criminal incidents per Connecticut State Police Administrative and Operations (A&O) policies and procedures. The SRO shall enforce state and local laws and ordinances. Make appropriate referrals to juvenile authorities or other governmental agencies.</p> </li><li> <p>The School Resource Officer (SRO) shall act in the capacity of a "Community Liaison and Problem Solver". Understanding many problems require change from within or assistance from the community. The SRO should be aware of community resources and contacts that can be helpful in solving a problem. Some community resources of which the SRO should be aware include: mental health services, substance abuse assessment and treatment providers, child protective services, runaway shelters, domestic violence services and family counseling agencies. The SRO will work with school counselors and other student support staff to assist students and to provide services to students involved in situations where referrals to service agencies are necessary and will assist in conflict resolution.</p> </li><li> <p>The School Resource Officer (SRO) shall establish and maintain a close partnership with school administrators in order to provide for a safe school environment. The SRO may assist school officials with their efforts to enforce Board of Education policies and procedures. The SRO will assist to ensure school administrator safety by being present during school searches, which may involve weapons, controlled dangerous substances or in such cases that the student's emotional state may present a risk to the administrator. The SRO may assist school administrators in emergency crisis planning and building security matters. The SRO shall provide a course of training for school personnel in handling crisis situations, which may arise at the school.</p> </li><li> <p>The School Resource Officer (SRO) shall be a "Positive Role Model" for the educational community. The SRO shall create appropriate boundaries for students seeking their approval, direction and guidance. The SRO shall promote the profession of a Police Officer. The SRO shall always maintain a professional appearance, be visible and accessible, take reported concerns seriously and follow through with commitments to take action. The SRO shall participate in school functions and maintain a working relationship with students, parents, faculty and the school administration.</p> </li><li> <p>The School Resource Officer (SRO) shall formulate educational crime prevention programs to reduce the opportunity for crimes against persons and property in schools.</p> </li><li> <p>The School Resource officer (SRO) shall secure the premises and personnel by patrolling the school property, monitoring surveillance equipment, inspecting buildings, access points and areas which permit entry.</p> </li></ol> <p>TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: The Student Resource Officer position is an approximately 193 day per year position and the working hours are typically 7:00 am- 3:00 pm. The School Resource Officer will be provided space located at the Shepaug Middle High School located at 159 South Street in the town of Washington. The office space will include a desk, telephone, computer, printer, school based walkie-talkie and access to the State Police report writing system.</p> <p>EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually by the Superintendent and the Washington Resident Trooper.</p>
