You will support and motivate staff to actively engage the community. You will guide staff to develop sustainable programming that utilizes staff and community expertise. You will build relationships and establish collaborative opportunities guided by Madison Public Library's mission, vision and strategic direction. You will provide direct service to the public and ensure that your staff members embody the high-level of customer service that defines the Madison Public Library.</p> <p>Library Supervisors promote and plan for delivery of library services to significant underserved populations, requiring special attention to cultural and social diversity. Please provide 3 concrete examples of ways you have helped to create a healthy work culture in your previous work environments, including the steps you took and how you knew it was successful. </li><li>Effective de-escalation skills are critical for all staff at Madison Public Library, and we expect our supervisors to set a high standard for our staff. What do you think are the most important things to consider when de-escalating a customer? Champion a positive and professional public perception of the library. </li><li>Assess staff development needs and direct staff to relevant training opportunities. </li><li>Support a culture of learning and discovery to ensure that community needs are met and anticipated. </li><li>Plan, develop and lead the implementation of major library program(s). </li><li>Establish and maintain community collaborations and partnerships. </li><li>Spearhead outreach opportunities that promote and deliver library services to underserved individuals and communities. </li><li>Maintain a broad knowledge of cultural, technology and social trends and issues at the local, regional and global levels. </li><li>Advocate for the value of public libraries. </li><li>Participate in local, state, and national conferences and meetings to acquire and share best practices. </li><li>Maintain a welcoming neighborhood library environment. </li><li>Engage in active listening and tactful communication to promote open sharing and a positive communication environment. </li><li>Embrace a commitment to equity and diversity. </li><li>Perform related work as required. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Four years of experience performing responsible professional library work as a librarian, including experience performing a wide variety of library-related tasks comparable to tasks performed as aLibrarian 2with the City of Madison. </li><li>Master's degree in library or information science. (December 2025 graduates are welcome to apply) </li><li>OR- </li></ul> <p>Four years of experience in applying the following:</p> <ul> <li>Library science theories, principles, practices and terminology applicable to a public library. </li><li>Automated and manual library systems. </li><li>Professional library reference and collection development strategies and resources. </li><li>Professional library program implementation and development. </li><li>Computer software applicable to the duties of the position. </li></ul> <p>Familiarity with</p> <ul> <li>Leadership principles and practices. </li></ul> <p>The City of Madison strives to provide exceptional customer service to all its residents and visitors. Therefore successful candidates will have demonstrated ability to effectively work with multicultural communities.</p> <p>For a complete list of the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities, please reference the classification specification.</p> <p>Special Requirements</p> <p>Ability to meet the transportation requirements of this position, which includes regular trips to other libraries or community locations.</p> <p>Physical Requirements:</p> <ul> <li>Ability to lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds (equivalent to a bucket of books) and must be capable of pushing wheeled carts of books and other materials weighing up to 200 pounds onto and off elevators and across carpeted areas. </li><li>Ability to frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, reach overhead, and repeatedly lift books weighing as much as three pounds. </li><li>Ability to work in an office environment, requiring the ability to sit/stand at a desk, work on a computer and use a monitor for extended periods of time. </li><li>The payroll title for this position is Librarian 3-Non-Represented. </li></ul>
