<p>Department</p> <p>College of Medicine, CLIA Lab Diagnostics</p> <p>Institute for Pediatric Rare Diseases (IPRD)</p> <p>Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li>Serve as CLIA Laboratory Director with accountability for quality, compliance, and test result approval. </li><li>Ensure adherence to CLIA, CAP, CMS, and Florida Department of Health regulations. </li><li>Participate in formulating laboratory policies, standard operating procedures, and quality management systems. </li><li>Supervise variant scientists and genetic counselors. </li><li>Participate in validation of assays, proficiency testing, and continual quality improvement. </li><li>Have primary responsibility for final clinical interpretation and written reports for all clinical genome sequencing cases. </li><li>Provide consultation to clinicians and genetic counselors on test utilization and interpretation. </li><li>Partner with IPRD leadership to expand services statewide and build collaborations with healthcare systems and industry. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent from an accredited institution with training in genetics, genomics, human genetics, or a related field within the biological sciences. </li><li>Board certification/eligibility (ABMGG -LGG). </li><li>Eligible for Florida licensure as a Laboratory Director. </li><li>At least 2 years of experience working in a high-complexity CLIA laboratory. </li><li>Strong background in next-generation sequencing, preferably genome sequencing. </li><li>Demonstrated leadership ability in laboratory management, quality assurance, and compliance. </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>3 - 5 years of experience working in a high-complexity CLIA-certified genome sequencing laboratory. </li><li>Prior experience directing or helping to establish a CLIA-certified genome sequencing laboratory. </li><li>Demonstrated expertise in rare disease diagnostics and application of ACMG/AMP variant interpretation guidelines. </li><li>A strong record of collaboration in multidisciplinary genomic medicine teams, including clinicians, genetic counselors, variant scientists, and technologists. </li><li>Experience in mentoring and training junior faculty, fellows, or laboratory staff in genomic diagnostics. </li><li>Evidence of scholarly contributions, such as publications, invited presentations, or participation in professional working groups (e.g., ClinGen, ACMG). </li><li>Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), genomic databases, and bioinformatics workflows for high-throughput sequencing. </li><li>Experience partnering with healthcare systems, industry, or public health agencies to expand access to genomic testing. </li></ul> <p>Helpful</p> <ul> <li>The Florida Institute for Pediatric Rare Diseases (IPRD) seeks an American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) board-certified or board-eligible Laboratory Genetics and Genomics (LGG) faculty member to help lead its CLIA-certified Genome Sequencing Laboratory. This position is one of several new recruitments in clinical genetics and genomics as IPRD builds a multidisciplinary team of experts in genomic medicine at Florida State University. Together, our team of laboratory directors, variant scientists, medical geneticists, genetic counselors, and technologists will form a collaborative and interactive environment dedicated to advancing precision medicine for patients and families across Florida. </li><li>The IPRD genome sequencing diagnostic facility is designed for statewide reach and national impact. It will support integration of genome sequencing into newborn screening and rare disease diagnosis, while also serving as a platform for translational research and innovation. As part of a growing team of genomic medicine specialists at FSU, the CLIA Laboratory Director will have the unique opportunity to help guide the laboratory's expansion, foster collaborations with healthcare systems and industry partners, and help position IPRD as a statewide hub of excellence in genomic diagnostics and clinical research. </li><li>The Laboratory Director will ensure compliance with all CLIA and CAP regulations, help oversee high-complexity testing, and provide expert consultation to physicians and genetic counselors. Working within a dynamic team framework, the Director will play a leadership role in establishing standards, mentoring colleagues at multiple professional levels, and contributing to the integration of genomic testing into both clinical care and research programs. The position offers the opportunity for protected research time, up to 50 percent for candidates with strong research training or demonstrated potential.
