<p>Potawatomi Zoo</p> <p>Animal Care Supervisor - Large Animal</p> <p>Summary:</p> <p>This role involves supervising, mentoring, and evaluating our large animal team of full-time keepers, assistants, and seasonal staff. This position oversees our Hoofstock and Carnivore sections of the zoo. This hands-on position takes place in a fast-paced environment within a growing organization. The supervisor will work closely with the curatorial staff to oversee the animal care aspects of the zoo and will be an integral part of the animal management team.</p> <p>Expectation:</p> <p>This is a dynamic managerial role for a motivated self-starter who thrives with minimal supervision and excels in a team environment. As a lead-by-example position, you will work alongside animal care staff, provide guidance, and step in as an animal keeper during unforeseen circumstances. You may also assist with grounds and maintenance projects as needed. Flexibility in scheduling is essential to meet departmental demands. The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of the zoo, balancing management of the animal department with an appreciation for the guest experience.</p> <p>Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Supervise, train, evaluate, and support the Animal Care staff. </li><li>Participate in the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of new Animal Care personnel. </li><li>Assess workloads and develop staff schedules accordingly. </li><li>Provide mentorship and guidance to Animal Care staff. </li><li>Fill in for Animal Care staff as necessary. </li><li>Serve as a liaison between upper Animal Management and the Animal Care team. </li><li>Serve as Supervisor on duty as needed. </li><li>Ability and willingness to be a part of the emergency recapture team with either firearms or chemical restraint. </li><li>Lead efforts to ensure the zoo meets or exceeds evolving care and husbandry standards in line with modern zoological practices. </li><li>Conduct annual performance reviews for keeper staff. </li><li>Ensure compliance with USDA and AZA regulations through regular walkthroughs and continuous monitoring of animal exhibits and zoo property. </li><li>Collaborate with other departments (e.g., Development/Marketing, Special Events, and Education) by providing educational programs or animal appearances for media, promotional events, or donors. </li><li>Attend staff meetings to discuss animal collection needs, resolve issues, and learn new policies or procedures. </li><li>Maintain the aesthetics and cleanliness of animal habitats and zoo grounds to meet the highest zoo standards, including care for exhibit perching, plants, nest boxes, and overall cleanliness. </li><li>Assist in coordinating animal shipments. </li><li>Participate in and contribute to Animal Welfare meetings. </li><li>Assist with collection planning, including potential IR responsibilities. </li><li>Review daily reports, initiating or assisting in necessary responses. </li><li>Engage in professional development opportunities and maintain industry affiliations to enhance knowledge. </li><li>Maintain strict confidentiality. </li><li>Perform any other assigned duties. </li></ul> <p>General Skills:</p> <ul> <li>Solid understanding of zoo animal husbandry and strong observational skills. </li><li>Ability to effectively manage staff while promoting a positive team environment through fairness and inclusivity. </li><li>Strong organizational and communication skills are essential. </li><li>Capable of giving and understanding written and verbal instructions, and accurately executing tasks while recording observations thoughtfully. </li><li>Proficient in public speaking and delivering animal presentations to audiences, both informally and formally. </li><li>Ability to multitask and delegate responsibilities efficiently. </li><li>The innate ability to manage people is essential. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>A minimum of 5 years of experience working with exotic animals, along with an AA, AS, or higher degree in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science, or a related field. A Bachelor's degree is preferred. </li><li>Experience with a diverse range of taxa is preferred. </li><li>At least 2 years of supervisory experience is required, which may include a lead or senior keeper role. </li><li>A valid driver's license from Indiana or Michigan is required. </li><li>Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and have the physical ability to perform strenuous work. </li><li>First Aid/CPR certification preferred; willingness to obtain training if not currently certified. </li></ul> <p>How to Apply</p> <p>Please submit resume and cover letter to Jami Richard, General Curator, at hr@potawatomizoo.org</p> <p>Potawatomi Zoo</p> <p>500 S.
