<p>South Pasadena Unified School District</p> <p>GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <p>This is a position mandated by the special education program. This position is dependent on special education funding sources and requirements other than the general fund. The ability to fund this position therefore may vary from semester to semester. Employment in this position is dependent on the need to provide a mandated service and is subject to termination of services on short notice.</p> <p>EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:</p> <p>Under general supervision, to supervise a student during the school day including brunch and lunch. The incumbent in this position may need to ride the provided transportation from the student’s home to school and return, and be trained in special techniques based on the needs of the child. Also performs a variety of follow-up instructional activities; assists in the conduct of training and learning activities with a child experiencing special learning needs; performs a variety of routine clerical and supportive activities; and to do other related work as required. Will be expected to lift and care for personal needs including hygiene. Will assist in maintaining students equipment. QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>EDUCATION: Under current State and Federal Law, requirements include proof of a high school diploma or its equivalent to be submitted with completed application and meet one of the three requirements: A) Completion of 2 years of study (48 units) at an institution of higher learning, or B) an Associate degree or higher, or C) pass a rigorous District-administered assessment that demontrates the knowledge of and ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing and math. Preferably with training or course work in child growth and development, special education, instructional technology, medicine, or a closely related field.</p> <p>Desired Experience: One year of paid or volunteer experience working with children of various age levels requiring a specialized learning environment. A rudimentary knowledge of medical information and first aid is desirable.</p> <p>Knowledge of: Basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics, particularly pertaining to pupils with special learning needs; behavior management strategies and techniques relating to pupils experiencing atypical control problems; appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, basic arithmetical concepts; routine record storage, retrieval, and management procedures.</p> <p>Ability To: Ability to work with children with exceptional needs. Depending on the special needs of the child, the incumbent may be required to do such things as, (but not limited to ): physically lift/move/transports students; tend to toilet needs of the child; it may be necessary to ride with the student on the provided transportation from home to school and return; demonstrate and understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups, particularly those exhibiting specialized needs; appropriately manage student behavior and guide student toward more acceptable social behaviors; communicate effectively in oral and written form especially with parents of the student; perform routine clerical tasks; learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of a training and education environment; understand and carry out oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with children and adults.</p> <p>Other: Passing grade on the State required Instructional Assistant Proficiency Test.
