Barnes-Jewish Hospital's staff is composed of full-time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by a house staff of residents, interns, fellows and other medical professionals. Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.</p> <p>Serious illness creates tremendous challenges for patients and for the people around them. Palliative care expands traditional medical treatment by using an interdisciplinary structure to deliver holistic care to people with advanced disease. The Palliative Care Service is a collaborative effort between Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. Launched in September 2005, it is the first comprehensive hospital-based palliative care program in Missouri.</p> <p>The palliative care team at Barnes-Jewish Hospital consists of a chaplain, social workers, nurse practitioners, and physicians. Team members combine their expertise to provide comprehensive management of the physical, psychological, and spiritual issues related to a patient's illness. The service assists with pain and symptom management and addresses quality of life issues for patients and families coping in serious illness.
