<p>The Dane County Airport in Madison, Wisconsin, is recruiting for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Skilled Laborer position. The Eligibility List created may be used to fill future Skilled Laborer - Airport vacancies over the next six (6) months.</p> <p>Normal schedule includes a seasonal second shift:</p> <p>April - October: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.</p> <p>November - March: Monday through Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.</p> <p>Undesirable Hours Premium Pay: Employees assigned to this classification at the Airport also receive undesirable hours pay of $3.00 for any time worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., and for any time worked on Saturday and/or Sunday.</p> <p>COMMITMENT TO EQUITY & INCLUSION</p> <p>As an employer, we strive to provide a work environment where diversity and differing opinions are valued, creativity is encouraged, continuous learning and improvement are fostered, teamwork and open/honest communication are encouraged, and meeting customer needs through quality service is a shared goal. Applicants from traditionally underrepresented populations including women and racial and ethnic minorities are especially encouraged to apply.</p> <p>DEFINITION</p> <p>Under supervision, to be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and condition of airport grounds, buildings, and surface areas; to perform manual labor; to operate light, medium, and heavy-size motorized equipment; to serve as lead worker as assigned; and to perform related duties as required.</p> <p>EXAMPLES OF DUTIES</p> <p>Patches holes and seals surfaces with asphalt, concrete, and gravel; maintains shoulders; cuts brush, clears trash, trims or removes trees, and mows grass; plows snow and applies ice control procedures; checks and replaces broken or missing signs; sweeps surfaces, and performs similar related tasks involved in airport maintenance; operates equipment including trucks, tractor-mowers, painting machines, sweepers, concrete mixers, small rollers, loaders, forklifts, spreaders, and similar equipment of comparable size and complexity; operates stump cutters, chain saws, asphalt kettles, jackhammers, weed sprayers, hand mowers, and various hand tools; ensures that equipment is serviced with gas, oil, water, and lubricants; performs or assists with manual work in maintenance of roads and aircraft operating surfaces, culverts, drains, ditches, buildings, hangars, and roofs; acts as helper to other maintenance employees; may install, repair or replace fences; trains other employees, as directed; may direct temporary help; may perform minor repairs to tools or equipment and assist in major maintenance of equipment.</p> <p>Education, Training and Experience:</p> <p>Requires high school graduation or its equivalency and one year of relevant experience in the repair and maintenance of roads (e.g., repairing potholes, snow plowing, etc.) or two years' experience in a construction or maintenance related field (e.g., applicants would have experience in building construction, landscaping, farm operation, park maintenance, airports or railroads). Also requires six (6) months experience operating loaders or equivalent equipment operation. Preferred experience includes substantial emphasis in the operation of heavy earth moving and construction equipment such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, skid steers, backhoes, etc. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.</p> <p>Licenses:</p> <p>Possession of a valid Wisconsin Class "B" commercial driver's license at time of application and a Class "A" commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsement within six (6) months of appointment. Everyone who has a commercial driver's license ("CDL") must be registered in the US Department of Transportation's Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse. Registration is available at https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/register. Applicants must pass drug/alcohol testing after a conditional offer of employment has been made.</p> <p>Special Requirements:</p> <p>Candidates who reach the final selection stage will be subject to an FBI criminal history records check, TSA security assessment, employment history verification, and a driving record background check. Must be available for work at any time including nights, holidays, weekends, and during snow and other airport emergencies.</p> <p>Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job's responsibilities. Wisconsin's Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 - 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. However, Dane County may disqualify an applicant if the position's responsibilities are substantially related to the applicant's criminal history (e.g., the nature of the crime and its relationship to the position, whether hiring, transferring or promoting an applicant would pose an unreasonable risk to the business, its employees, customers and vendors, etc.). Management reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check.</p> <p>For Bilingual Positions:</p> <ul> <li>Provide services in both English and the required foreign language (e.g., Spanish, Arabic, Hmong, etc.). </li><li>Applicants being considered for bilingual positions will be tested during the recruitment process prior to employment. This will primarily consist of passing an oral language proficiency assessment from English to foreign language and foreign language to English, but may require additional language testing, such as written translation, if it is an essential function of the job. </li><li>If applicable, individuals may confirm with the Employee Relations Division whether results of bilingual language certifications/examinations they currently hold qualify them for the position's bilingual designation. </li></ul> <p>Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:</p> <p>This position is active for the entire shift (standing, walking, stooping, twisting, lifting, bending, pushing, reaching, climbing, crouching and crawling); Must be able to perform heavy manual work in severe weather conditions; Must be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds unassisted and heavier loads with assistance; Ability to use hand/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulations, pushing and pulling and operating controls and equipment; Must be able to see and hear within normal ranges. Work typically performed outdoors, inside motorized construction equipment and inside maintenance facilities.</p> <p>Knowledge of traffic regulations as they apply to the safe operation of motorized construction and maintenance equipment; Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in construction, maintenance and repair of paved and unpaved surfaces and buildings and grounds; Skill in the operation of heavy-sized construction and maintenance equipment, especially during adverse weather conditions; Ability to operate mowers, tractors, trucks, plows, snow blowers, sweepers, painting machines, loaders, forklifts, rollers, spreaders, jackhammers, sprayers, crack sealers and other equipment of similar size and complexity; Ability to service and to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and assist with major maintenance of equipment; Ability to perform heavy manual work; Ability to work in severe weather conditions; Ability to make building and building systems repairs; Ability to be innovative and work without close supervision; Ability to assign and direct the work of others; Ability to communicate using two-way radio; Ability to communicate tactfully and courteously with the public and co-workers; Ability to reorganize daily work schedule depending on staffing and/or activity in area; Ability to be safety conscious at all times regarding physical activity (lifting and moving items); Ability to reason and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; Mental ability to address potential adverse or negative situations that may arise from time to time; Ability to make independent decisions, follow instructions, accept constructive criticism and be able to project a positive image of the facility to customers; Must be dependable, reliable and have a previous history of good attendance and punctuality; Must be able to attend staff meetings and training meetings as required; Knowledge of and ability to operate ladders and lifts.</p>
