Washtenaw Community College is committed to creating a welcoming environment.Washtenaw Community College is an Equal Opportunity Employer.</p> <p>Posting Details</p> <p>Posting Details (Default Section)</p> <p>Posting Number: 0603831</p> <p>Position Title: Grounds Pesticide (Internal Bid Only)</p> <p>Position is: Regular full-time</p> <p>Position Type: Staff Position (Full Time/Part Time)</p> <p>Department/Ofc.: Facilities</p> <p>Position Description:</p> <p>Position Summary: The Grounds Pesticide position is responsible for applying fertilizers and pesticides to control weeds, invasive species, plant diseases and pests in landscape areas, hard surface cracks, athletic fields, and turf areas. Grounds Pesticide completes overall maintenance of the campus landscape and grounds including irrigation systems, snow/ice control, landscaping, hardscapes, mowing/trimming, equipment maintenance, waste handling, athletic fields, and outdoor campus events and set ups.</p> <p>Essential Duties include:</p> <p>Perform the planting, pruning, mulching, mowing, and care of turf, annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, etc. using proper grounds maintenance principles, practices, and techniques. Plans, schedules and distributes restricted and general use fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, etc., and utilizes Integrated Pest Management for completion of pesticide applications. Prepares, and maintains records, reports, recommendations, etc., of pesticide applications, treatment plans, and product information. Properly identify plant materials, and remove undesirable plant species from the landscape by hand or with the use of appropriate equipment. Operate power equipment such as tractors, zero turn mowers, power brooms, small engines, utility vehicles and other motorized vehicles rented or owned by the college. Assist with diagnoses, repair, and maintenance of power equipment and motorized vehicles owned or leased by the college. Complete the installation, repairs, programming, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance of irrigation systems. Weld, fabricate, and repair various types of metals. Remove snow from walkways, drives, paths, and parking lots by hand shoveling, and with plow trucks, power brooms, snow blowers and tractors. Operate motorized equipment including, but not limited to, aerial lift, front-end loader, forklift, and dump truck. Collect, haul, and dispose of refuse, litter, and debris by hand and with hi-lo lift truck, to maintain campus in a clean and sanitary condition. Maintain athletic fields, courts, and related amenities by grading, mowing, chalking, painting, and setting up equipment for practices, games, and other scheduled uses. Inspect, clean, sharpen, lubricate, and perform routine maintenance to hand tools and small power equipment to maintain in clean working order. Perform tree trimming, minor site construction projects, and assists other college departments in site related special assignments. Monitor, maintain, and repair concrete and asphalt hard surfaces by cleaning, painting, cold patching, etc. and maintain underground domestic water, storm water, and sewer drains as needed. Complete various setups for outdoor campus events, displays, and banner installations. Identify and report any damage, unsafe conditions, deterioration, or needed repairs to campus grounds or property. Maintain exterior signage, nature trails, outdoor seating, and related site amenities. Wash vehicles, equipment, tools, and shop work areas to maintain cleanliness and shop safety. May make recommendations for the selection of grounds equipment and materials. Perform other duties as assigned. Regular attendance on campus is required for this position.</p> <p>Work Environment/Physical Demands:</p> <p>Ability to work while wearing multiple items of personal protective equipment (PPE), with potential to encounter dust, strong odors, exhaust fumes (gas/diesel), and spikes in noise levels due to equipment or tool use. Ability to work outside in various types of weather, including inclement conditions for extended periods. Physically capable of walking over uneven surfaces, bending and kneeling for long stretches of time, climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting 50 pounds from floor level to at least waist high. Ability to lift, pull, and use pushing motions, in repetition, with tools, materials, and landscape equipment from light to heavy in weight</p> <p>Hours/Schedule:</p> <p>This position will work 40 hours per week. Schedule dependent on college need, so must have the ability to accept temporary schedule changes with minimum notice. All shifts are posted up to twice a year for requested shift preference. Landscape and Grounds shifts will begin the first pay period of April and November, and include a day shift and an afternoon shift.</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications:</p> <p>Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:</p> <p>High school diploma or GED equivalent. Minimum of two (2) years, recent, full time, paid work experience in Grounds Maintenance and pesticide related duties. Possess and maintain a current State of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certificate in Categories 3A, 3B & 6. Thorough plant identification skills and knowledge of horticultural principles, practices and techniques for implementing campus IPM program and proper pest management. Practical knowledge of landscape and grounds maintenance principles, practices, techniques, and materials. Practical knowledge and experience with installation, repairs, programming, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance of irrigation systems. Previous knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment, and demonstrated ability to operate power tools and power vehicles such as; chainsaws, chippers, mowers, snowplows, snow blowers, salt spreaders, power brooms, and salt spreaders. Ability to utilize various computer software programs for digital work order system, and Microsoft Office components with reasonable efficiency for email, training, and documentation. Possess and maintain a valid state issued Driver's license and Chauffer's License. Ability to obtain and maintain fork lift and aerial lift certification. Ability to work under minimal supervision. Ability to effectively communicate orally, in writing, and electronically. Demonstrated ability to climb a ladder to a height of 15 feet and lift 50 pounds of materials to a height of 3 feet. Ability to interact with clients, co-workers and management in a positive, supportive and cooperative way.</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications:</p> <p>Additional Preferred Qualifications:</p> <p>Landscape and Grounds full time, paid work experience at a higher education facility or school. Certification by National Association of Landscape Professionals as a Landscape Industry Certified Technician. Associates degree or successful completion of courses, concentrated in Landscape and Turfgrass Management, Horticulture, Arboriculture, or related to Grounds Maintenance.
