<p>Department: Sheriff's Department</p> <p>Anticipated Work Schedule: Various (24/7 Operations)</p> <p>Reports To: Corrections Corporal</p> <p>Full Time or Part Time: Full Time</p> <p>Regular or Temporary: Regular</p> <p>Bargaining Unit: OPBA</p> <p>Classified or Unclassified: Classified</p> <p>FLSA: Non-Exempt</p> <p>Starting Wage: $26.50 per hour with a Comprehensive Benefit Package</p> <p>Correction Officers are instrumental to the success of operations in the jail. Our work is hands-on and interactive with different opportunities for growth. Correction Officers are responsible for the supervision, safety and security of inmates and the jail itself.</p> <p>Essential Job Functions</p> <p>Supervise and monitor inmates within the Correction Center in all daily activities, including:</p> <ul> <li>Observing inmate behavior. </li><li>Making appropriate referrals. </li><li>Counting and searching inmates and effects. </li><li>Distributing meals, commissary, hygiene, items and mail. </li><li>Reporting unusual incidents orally and through documentation. </li><li>Escorting inmates through the center including visitation, recreation, library, programs, courts and intake/release. </li><li>Complete required routine forms, logs and reports. </li><li>Use of safety and security equipment to include; keys, alarm devices, fire extinguishers, self-contained breathing apparatus, fire and riot hoses, electrical control panels, appropriate OSHA safety equipment, computer terminals, printer, fax, laundering equipment and any other mechanical equipment used within the Corrections Center. </li><li>Some shifts will require mandatory additional hours to be worked. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Requirements</p> <ul> <li>High school diploma or GED. </li><li>Must be 21 years old. </li><li>Not have been convicted of a felony, a serious misdemeanor, or have any pending cases. </li><li>Ability to pass a physical screening and a drug screening. </li><li>Must possess the ability to thoroughly read and understand the policies and procedures of the Cuyahoga County's Sheriff's Department. </li><li>Must possess the ability to write reports and to properly communicate with co-workers, superiors and inmates. </li></ul> <p>Perks and Benefits:</p> <ul> <li>Cuyahoga County will pay for your required Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) training where you will receive instruction in self-defense, institutional policies, regulations, operations and security procedures. </li><li>Rotating shifts are available. </li><li>Cuyahoga County offers comprehensive benefits with the flexibility that meets your unique needs. </li><li>You will be a part of a great retirement plan offered through Ohio Public Employees Retirement Plans (OPERS). </li><li>Potential hourly wage increase based on prior documented corrections experience. </li><li>Correctional Officers have the ability to advance into supervisory positions such as sergeant, lieutenant and captain or move into specialized units within the jail. </li></ul> <p>Application Process</p> <p>This is a competitive, classified position. The Personnel Review Commission (PRC) will check your application to make sure you meet the minimum qualifications. If you do, the PRC will invite you to take a civil service examination. The exam is specific to this position. Everyone who passes the exam goes on an eligibility list. To fill this opening, the PRC sends the hiring department and Human Resources (HR) a certified eligibility list with the top 25% candidates (or at least the ten highest scoring candidates, whichever is greater). HR helps the hiring department decide who from the certified list to follow up with for interviews and then a job offer.</p> <p>Most of our communication with candidates is through email. Prior criminal convictions do not automatically disqualify you from employment; the County looks at criminal convictions on a case-by-case basis using the guidelines in Chapter 306 of the County Code.</p> <p>Conviction of some misdemeanors and felonies may preclude applicants from serving in some positions.
