<p>The mission of NIU Athletics is to enhance the University, community and region through service and engagement while developing champions in the classroom, in competition and in life. With long standing traditions and core values centered on family, NIU Athletics is home to 17 NCAA Division I sport programs. Northern Illinois University, chartered in 1895, is a comprehensive teaching and research institution with over 19,000 currently enrolled students and houses seven (7) degree-granting colleges-Business, Education, Engineering and Engineering Technology, Health and Human Sciences, Law, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Visual and Performing Arts. Centrally located in DeKalb, Northern Illinois University is 30 miles west of Aurora, 65 miles west of Chicago, 36 miles west of Naperville, and 45 miles southeast of Rockford.</p> <p>Northern Illinois University Intercollegiate Athletics is hiring an Associate Director for Competitive Sports and Facilities within NIU Recreation. This position is full-time with benefits and will report directly to the Associate Athletic Director of Recreation.</p> <p>Position Summary</p> <p>Reporting to the Associate Athletic Director for Recreation, and ultimately to the Executive Associate Athletic Director/HR and Finance Administration, this position is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day oversight and the budget management of the areas within this oversight. The position is directly responsible for providing leadership and developing strong, comprehensive, and diverse Intramurals and Club Sports programs with the oversight of nutrition and fitness areas that are comparable to collegiate programs across the country.</p> <p>Essential Duties and Responsibilities</p> <p>Program Management, Club Sports - 20%</p> <ul> <li>Coordinate and manage all club sports programs. </li><li>Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate systems that support and encourage student leadership and participation. </li><li>Support a culture which resolves concerns and conduct issues in a timely fashion in accordance with University policies and procedures. </li><li>Manage an effective sport club governance system such as advisory or executive council. </li><li>Facilitate and encourage participation in NIRSA Championship Series and associated opportunities that enhance participant outcomes. </li><li>Assist when needed with set up, load in, and tear down of events. </li><li>Supervise the usage of all facilities, daily operations, equipment, and inventory. </li><li>Design, plan, and develop all club sports (leagues/tournaments/special events). </li><li>Identify and creatively utilize available resources for program delivery and create diversified options for participants. </li><li>Develop club sports program policies and procedures in alignment with department, division and university policies and procedures. </li><li>Serve as liaison to Study Body Government. </li></ul> <p>Program Management, Intramurals - 20%</p> <ul> <li>Design, plan, develop, coordinate, and manage all intramural sports (leagues/tournaments/special events). </li><li>Identify and creatively utilize available resources for program delivery and create diversified options for participants. </li><li>Foster and facilitate collaborative, inclusive, and contemporary programming in support of departmental strategies. </li><li>Design, develop, and implement programs and services which promote and encourage continual learning and developmental growth. </li><li>Integrate models of best practice in university recreation in areas such as sustainability, wellness, and social determinants of health. </li><li>Develop intramural sports program policies and procedures in alignment with department, division and university policies and procedures, applying best practices and compliance in carrying out policies and procedures relative to human resource management. </li><li>Assist in the development of a work culture that attracts and retains talented team members, and develop a diverse staff with a variety of skills. </li><li>Design and implement a recruitment, selection, and training program that provides staff with the knowledge and expertise they need to perform their job duties. </li><li>Design and implement opportunities to connect academic curriculum with opportunities for student learning including Graduate Assistantships, internships, practicums, projects, etc. </li><li>Cultivate leadership, citizenship, and engagement opportunities for student employees. </li><li>Coordinate payroll processes for all intramural sports personnel. </li><li>Implement organization-wide customer experience protocols for all staff. </li><li>Maintain staffing lists, statistical data, schedules and reports on employees who work associated events, monitoring to ensure proper services are delivered and appropriate service levels are maintained. </li><li>Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate systems that support and encourage student leadership and participation. </li><li>Support a culture which resolves concerns and conduct issues in a timely fashion in accordance with University policies and procedures. </li><li>Manage any software to support intramural sports and participant management. </li><li>Assist when needed with set up, load in, and tear down of events. </li><li>Develop participation data and program evaluations to assess participation and satisfaction measures in intramural sports, using benchmarking data for program evaluation and improvement. </li><li>Support a culture of evidence by demonstrating and promoting data informed decision making. </li><li>Prepare semester and annual reports demonstrating accomplishments and learning outcomes. </li><li>Serve as liaison to intramural students/teams. </li></ul> <p>Recreation Facility Operations - 15%</p> <ul> <li>Coordinate the Facility Operations program within the established university and Recreation policies and procedures. </li><li>Contribute to the departmental vision for physical evolution of the Recreation Center, Chick Evans Field House, and Outdoor Recreational Sports Complex with ideas to best support the campus community and the needs of the recreation department. </li><li>Working with the Associate Athletic Director for Intercollegiate Athletics Facilities Operations, facilitate custodial, maintenance, and facility work order requests, as well as tracking of Work Order completion and submissions. </li></ul> <p>Supervision - 15%</p> <ul> <li>Day to day oversight of assigned programs to include supervisory oversight of two full-time professional staff positions. </li><li>Conduct regular meetings with each direct report, assess and monitor progress, and create a cohesive team that effectively administers the department's operations and initiatives; This includes an evaluation of the program efficiencies and effectiveness and making programmatic changes for improvement. </li><li>Conduct regularly scheduled staff meetings. </li><li>Provide mentorship, training, and annual evaluations accordingly. </li></ul> <p>Risk Management - 10%</p> <ul> <li>Support both the department and the university's mitigation of risk and support overall health and safety of all participants. </li></ul> <p>Administration - 5%</p> <ul> <li>This position serves as a member of the Recreation Leadership Team and is required to be an integral leader by actively participating and contributing to staff meetings, training, and development activities. </li><li>Support department and university strategic plans. </li><li>Support the development of innovative collaborative partnerships to advance the departmental, divisional and institutional strategic reach. </li><li>Serve on committees and university initiatives as assigned. </li><li>Serve as the primary expert and department designee for outreach and collaboration with campus community regarding intramural and club sports. </li><li>Assist with the implementation of a diverse, inclusive, equitable environment. </li><li>Other duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Data Analysis - 5%</p> <ul> <li>Develop participation data and program evaluations to assess participation and satisfaction measures in intramural and club sports. </li><li>Seek benchmarking data for program evaluation and improvement. </li><li>Support a culture of evidence by demonstrating and promoting data informed decision making. </li><li>Prepare semester and annual reports demonstrating accomplishments and learning outcomes. </li></ul> <p>Financial Management - 5%</p> <ul> <li>Financial planning, monitoring and management of budgets for Intramural and Club Sport programs. </li><li>Develop appropriate revenue generation opportunities. </li></ul> <p>Marketing & Promotions - 5%</p> <ul> <li>Directly responsible for developing marketing strategies for Intramurals and Club Sports; This includes print, social, and digital media. </li><li>Support the design, implementation and evaluation of creative marketing and fundraising plans for intramural sports in alignment with department and institutional brand guidelines. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)</p> <ul> <li> <p>Any one of the following, from the categories below:</p> </li><li> <p>Master's degree in a field relevant to the position (e.g., Kinesiology, Sports Management, Exercise Science, Recreation, or closely related field)</p> </li><li> <p>OR-</p> </li><li> <p>Final semester or completed Graduate Assistantship with campus recreation or similar department performing duties for two (2) academic years consistent in area of specialization inherent to the position. *</p> </li><li> <p>OR-</p> </li><li> <p>Bachelor's degree in a field relevant to the position (e.g., Kinesiology, Sports Management, Exercise Science, Recreation, or closely related field)</p> </li><li> <p>AND-</p> </li></ul> <p>One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in the promotion, design, development, and/or administration of recreational programs.</p> <ul> <li> <p>OR-</p> </li><li> <p>Four (4) years (48 months) of work experience in promotion, design, development, and/or administration of recreational programs, intercollegiate athletics, campus recreation, park district or similar organization that provides similar program.</p> </li></ul> <p>Note: Students in the final semester of a Master's Degree program, may be allowed to complete a credential examination and will receive full consideration, including being interviewed.
