Always, we are guided by a single purpose: As we drive towards curing type 1 diabetes, we help make everyday life better for the people who face it.</p> <p>The VP, Business Development will enhance and implement Breakthrough T1D's strategy for research partnerships with companies, industry consortia, and non-governmental organizations advancing type 1 diabetes therapy development. The VP will lead a team responsible for developing new business partnerships and for managing existing ones, ensuring a robust portfolio of productive partnered projects. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of global research landscapes, especially in the metabolic and immunologic sciences, and a proven track record of securing partnerships. This role will report to the Chief Scientific Officer and work closely with other key areas within the Breakthrough T1D Research Department.</p> <p>This is a hybrid position based out of the NYC office (2 days per week in office required).</p> <p>Specific Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li>Define and lead a comprehensive business development and partnership strategy aligned with Breakthrough T1D's overall research strategy and organizational mission goals. Translate strategy into defined goals and success metrics. </li><li>Identify, develop, and execute new strategic research alliances across biotech and pharmaceutical companies, government and non-profit organizations. Use a forward-looking view of the T1D business landscape to inform partnership strategy and new opportunity areas. </li><li>Lead a high-performing business development team including direct reports. Oversee direct reports' negotiations of new partnerships and ensure project planning and execution is in line with Research governance deadlines. Set priorities and allocate team resources effectively. Motivate team to meet ambitious goals and foster professional development. </li><li>Work closely with the Chief Legal and Risk Office to draft, review and negotiate mission-related agreements through which Breakthrough T1D provides support to researchers and industry partners. This includes, but is not limited to, drug and device development agreements, research grants, and intellectual property license agreements. </li><li>Advise on contractual compliance enforcing BT1D's rights under existing agreements. Ensure existing partnerships meet goals, milestones, and deliverables. Identify and support active partnerships at risk by implementing mitigation strategies toward successful outcomes. </li><li>Build relationships with industry partners to develop research and development plans in T1D-prioritized therapeutic areas, including defining the scope of partnered projects, intermediate milestones/deliverables and associated payment schedules. </li><li>Perform research, landscape, and gap analyses of the business environment. Oversee due diligence on proposed collaborations, including assessment of financial health, competitive landscape, commercialization plans, etc. Advise on potential risks and go/no-go funding strategy. </li><li>Propose strategies to streamline processes for developing industry partnerships following best practice models. Create efficiencies around due diligence, review process, approvals, and finalizing contracts. </li><li>Develop customized mechanisms to support a diverse array of industry partners developing T1D therapies that are tailored to the type of company and project. </li><li>Liaise with internal stakeholders in a cross-functional matrix organization, such as Regulatory and Health Policy, Medical Affairs, Venture Philanthropy Fund, Development, and Marketing and Communications. Track and communicate key partnership pipeline activity and outcomes to senior leadership. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree required; and MBA, JD or equivalent degree preferred. </li><li>15+ years of experience in business development and alliance management experience within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry. </li><li>10+ years relevant and complex transactional experience with documented success in originating, negotiating and closing partnerships deals. Preferred experience includes serving as lead on transactions involving pharmaceutical or other life sciences companies and providing advice on investing in venture capital funded or publicly traded companies. Experience with patent law and patent licensing is helpful but not required. </li><li>Understanding of the drug and device development process, intellectual property landscapes and patent strategy. </li><li>Ability to build rapport, trust and strong relationships with colleagues and key stakeholders in a highly collaborative environment. </li><li>Demonstrated ability to lead, direct, and manage a multidisciplinary team in a matrix environment. </li><li>Skilled at anticipating issues and solving complex, nuanced problems in a manner that meets objectives. </li><li>Strategic thinker with the ability to drive innovation and adapt to a rapidly changing scientific landscape. </li><li>Strong presentation, verbal and written communication skills. </li></ul> <p>Target Salary - $200k - $240k</p> <p>Essential Functions:</p> <p>The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
