<p>JOB TITLE:</p> <p>Graduate Assistant</p> <p>CLASSIFICATION:</p> <p>Faculty</p> <p>DIVISION:</p> <p>Academic Affairs</p> <p>DEPARTMENT:</p> <p>Langston Hughes Memorial Library</p> <p>LOCATION:</p> <p>Lincoln University, PA, Main Campus (This is an in-person position)</p> <p>FLSA STATUS:</p> <p>Non-Exempt</p> <p>REPORTS TO:</p> <p>SALARY:</p> <p>Library Director and University Archivist and Records Manager</p> <p>$30,000 for 9-month position</p> <p>OVERVIEW:</p> <p>Lincoln University (LU), a historically Black, regional, comprehensive, liberal arts university is one of the 3 state-related institutions within the Pennsylvania Higher Education System. The university enrolls over 2,000 students, employs more than 100 full-time faculty members, and offers more than 30 undergraduate programs, and selected graduate programs.</p> <p>Within the university, The Lincoln University Archive and Special Collections collects and preserves vital resources for studying African American cultural, political, and educational history since the 19th century. Among its holdings are the Langston Hughes Estate Collection, offering insight into the poet's life and work, as well as the Black Panther Papers and a multitude of publications vital to studying the African American experience. Additionally, the archive holds institutional materials that highlight the university's significant role in African American education.</p> <p>JOB SUMMARY:</p> <p>Lincoln University invites applications for a 12-month opportunity consisting of a 3-month summer internship at University of Delaware and 9-month assistantship at Lincoln University. The successful candidate will have a commitment to research, expertise in Black Studies, and an interest in archives, preservation, digitization, exhibition, and curation. The ideal candidate will show evidence of thoughtful intellectual engagement with Black Studies. Candidates will be expected to be academically motivated with an attention to detail and an ability to work successfully both independently and as a member of a team. This position requires 20-25 hours per week from August 15 through May 30th.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <ul> <li>Assist with archival processing: Organize, describe, and preserve historical documents, manuscripts, photographs, and other materials related to African American and African Studies. </li><li>Conduct research support: Aid faculty, students, and visiting scholars in locating and using relevant archival resources. </li><li>Create finding aids and metadata: Develop guides and catalog entries to enhance accessibility and discoverability of special collections. </li><li>Digitize archival materials: Scan and prepare digital files for inclusion in the library's digital collections, ensuring proper handling of fragile materials. </li><li>Participate in exhibit development: Collaborate on physical and digital exhibits showcasing materials from the collections. </li><li>Support outreach and educational programming: Help plan and execute workshops, lectures, and community engagement activities. </li><li>Ensure proper preservation techniques: Monitor environmental conditions and handle materials according to archival best practices. </li><li>Observe all laws, rules, regulations and policies for protecting and maintaining intellectual property rights, copyright, and academic integrity in the collection, processing, preserving, and archiving of materials. </li></ul> <p>QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>The successful candidate will have:</p> <ul> <li>Academic interest and background in Black Studies/Africana Studies/Black Digital Humanities. </li><li>Academic motivation and intellectual curiosity. </li><li>Continued good academic standing for the duration of the appointment. </li><li>Detail-oriented, motivated, and able to see projects through to completion. </li><li>Able to work well independently, to take direction, and to work collaboratively. </li><li>High standards of personal ethics, intellectual honesty, and academic integrity. </li><li>This is an on-site, in-person position. Attendance is key and must comply with the schedule established with the supervisor and must fall within Special Collections' hours of operation from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. </li><li>Students must have a reliable means of transportation in order to complete 20 hours/week onsite at Lincoln University. </li></ul> <p>EDUCATION:</p> <ul> <li>Pursuing an M.A. or Ph.D. degree in Africana Studies or related fields. </li></ul> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS:</p> <p>Moderate lifting up to 20 pounds as frequently as needed to move objects; dexterity to write and manipulate computer keyboard and mouse; ability to hear and speak clearly; and body mobility to stoop, kneel, bend and reach.</p> <p>WORK ENVIRONMENT:</p> <p>Work is performed in a university campus environment. All classes are currently taught in-person and faculty are required to be present on campus to teach their courses.
