<p>JOB DESCRIPTIONCity of Allentown</p> <p>Position Description</p> <p>Class Title: Maintenance Worker I</p> <p>Grade Number:6M</p> <p>Department: Bureau of Streets</p> <p>Union: Yes - SEIU</p> <p>GENERAL PURPOSE</p> <p>Performs a wide variety of labor duties involved in the construction, surfacing, and repair of city streets, roadways, alleys, and other surfaces.</p> <p>SUPERVISION RECEIVED</p> <p>Work under the supervision of the Supervisor in the Streets Department, or Crew Leader in absence of supervisor.</p> <p>SUPERVISION EXERCISED</p> <p>May exercise supervision over a junior Maintenance Worker I.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</p> <p>Work from established routines, specifications, specific handwritten, typed, or oral instructions and standard knowledge of surfacing and repair operations and methods.</p> <p>Spread, levels and compacts dirt, gravel, paving (hot) and patching materials.</p> <p>Makes street repairs using crackseal (kettle), tacking kettle, spray patcher.</p> <p>Performs shoveling, raking, floating, and tamping; operates jackhammer, compressor, tamper plate and concrete saw.</p> <p>Operates pickup trucks to transport equipment and haul tools and material. Makes sure proper fuels necessary to operate or heat job materials/equipment are filled and ready to go.</p> <p>Make up portable barricades, truck sideboards, sandbags and no parking signs as needed.</p> <p>Salts, plows and removes snow as required with pickup trucks. Applies salt brine to roadways with small brine truck.</p> <p>Uses paving and repair equipment and during process may have to lift up to 50-pound manhole covers. On occasion when manhole castings need to be removed, weights up to 75lbs. may be experienced.</p> <p>Sweeps streets, collects trash and garbage.</p> <p>Cuts down and clears growth from work area.</p> <p>Uses power and hand tools.</p> <p>Notify crew leader or supervisor of unusual conditions.</p> <p>Maintain equipment, tools and records.</p> <p>Overtime will be required during emergency/nonemergency situations including night shift and weekends.</p> <p>Performs other duties, including those of other classifications (high lower) and standby crews, as assigned and/or as conditions warrant.</p> <p>Provide quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to our customers, citizens and internal departments.</p> <p>Wears appropriate safety equipment as needed.</p> <p>Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.</p> <p>Perform routine vehicle maintenance as outlined on daily inspection sheets.</p> <p>Shift work may be required</p> <p>Perform related work as may be required.</p> <p>DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>Education and Experience:</p> <p>Graduation from high school or technical school; or equivalent certification.</p> <p>Valid drivers license of the appropriate classification.</p> <p>Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities</p> <p>Knowledge of tools, materials, and processes needed in the performance of duties.</p> <p>Ability to read, write, add and subtract whole numbers.</p> <p>Ability to understand and follow standard routines and practices on street repairs and construction.</p> <p>Ability to work outdoors under varying weather conditions.</p> <p>Some knowledge of equipment, trucks, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities;</p> <p>Knowledge of right-to-know laws as instructed and posted.</p> <p>Skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment.</p> <p>Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.</p> <p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>Possession of a valid Class C drivers license.</p> <p>TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED</p> <p>Motorized vehicles and equipment, pickup truck, tamper, plate compactor, street and chain saws, pumps, compressors, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, picks, rakes, sledge hammer, mobile radio, phone and jackhammer.</p> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS</p> <p>The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee frequently works with hot materials that without wearing the proper clothing or proper safety equipment could cause severe burns.
