<p>Strasburg Rail Road Company</p> <p>POSITION DESCRIPTION</p> <p>POSITION TITLE: Railcar Technician - Electrical/HVAC/Plumbing/Mechanical FLSA: Non-exempt Employment Status: FT</p> <p>Retirement: Railroad Retirement</p> <p>POSITION REPORTS TO: Superintendent - Locomotives & Rolling Stock</p> <p>POSITION PURPOSE: The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance and repairs to railcar electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. The position will also be responsible to assist with design and installation of new or upgraded electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems for railcars. Additional training will be provided for the testing and maintenance of railcar pneumatic braking systems and other mechanical systems as needed.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES:</p> <ul> <li>Work safely in a railroad environment, according to regulated practices. </li><li>Perform routine inspections and repairs to high and low voltage electrical systems and generators. </li><li>Perform routine inspections and repairs to railcar fresh and wastewater systems (similar to RV systems) </li><li>Perform routine inspections and repairs to railcar onboard HVAC systems. </li><li>Troubleshoot malfunctioning electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems. </li><li>Assist engineering and design teams with recommendations in designing new railcar utility systems. </li><li>Install new railcar utility systems. </li><li>Perform routine inspections and repairs to railcar mechanical and pneumatic braking systems. </li><li>Maintain detailed records of repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities. </li><li>Collaborate with other mechanics and maintenance staff to troubleshoot complex issues. </li><li>Work in a monthly standby rotation (average 3-4 days per month) on a swing shift schedule. </li><li>Keep workplace clean and orderly. </li><li>Comply with instructions provided by supervisor or designees. </li><li>Perform routine maintenance and inspection of shop machinery, power tools, hand tools, equipment installations, and accessories associated with the foregoing. </li><li>Operate machinery such as but not limited to forklifts, telehandlers, skid-steer loader, backhoe. </li><li>Perform additional duties as required. </li></ul> <p>QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>High school diploma or equivalent. </li><li>Preferred: Post-secondary education or training in a discipline related to commercial or industrial electrical work or HVAC; or significant similar work experience. </li><li>Mechanical aptitude or work experience. </li><li>Understanding and ability to troubleshoot A/C 3 Phase electrical systems. </li><li>Familiarity with HVAC installation and troubleshooting. </li><li>Familiarity with basic plumbing principles and piping installation. </li><li>Experience working with high voltage systems. </li><li>Proficient with the use of hand and power tools. </li><li>Willingness to work at heights on ladders, scaffolds, man lifts or on top of rail mounted equipment. </li><li>Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to think outside the box. </li><li>Enthusiasm for the company and its mission. </li><li>Ability to carry out verbal or written instructions. </li><li>Preferred: Experience operating welding machines, oxy/fuel torch rigs, plasma cutters, angle grinders and other metal fabrication tools. </li><li>Ability to read and work from simple mechanical drawings. </li><li>Working knowledge of arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, and algebraic math. </li><li>Possession of valid driver's license. </li><li>Organizational skills and careful attention to detail. </li><li>Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required. </li><li>Willingness and desire to learn. </li></ul> <p>PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS:</p> <ul> <li>Works safely and efficiently and maintains a clean and orderly workplace. </li><li>Able to identify properly and improperly functioning systems and diagnose problems. </li><li>Carries out proper and efficient repairs in compliance with company policies. </li><li>Fabricates parts to specified dimensions and tolerances. </li><li>Able to identify parts and materials appropriate for application. </li><li>Anticipates need for materials and makes requisitions in a timely manner. </li><li>Seeks instruction when needed to complete inspections and repairs properly. </li><li>Shows up to work on time, properly attired and prepared to work. </li><li>Enthusiastically takes on responsibility and aids Team Members to accomplish department goals. </li><li>Complies with instructions from superiors and works independently when required. </li><li>Complies with all policies outlined in the Employee Handbook or supplemental policy or guideline memos from the President. </li><li>Works well with others </li></ul> <p>WORKING CONDITIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Full-time, minimum forty (40) hours per week. Regular shop hours are 7:30am. to 4:00pm., Monday through Friday. Actual shift will have variations due to changing projects, priorities, standby schedule, and shifting train schedules. </li><li>Work is both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions during all seasons. </li><li>Work requires regular social contact with team members and customers. </li><li>Occasional exposure to very hot or very cold temperatures. </li><li>Frequent exposure in a shop setting to soot, dust, oil, paint, and other potentially hazardous substances. </li><li>Occasional work in spaces allowing limited mobility. </li><li>Frequent use of personal protective equipment. </li><li>Extended periods of walking, standing, kneeling. </li><li>Occasionally crawling and climbing. </li><li>Occasional lifting in excess of 50 pounds. </li></ul> <p>INTENT AND FUNCTION OF JOB DESCRIPTION:</p> <p>Job descriptions assist organizations in ensuring that the hiring process is fairly administered and that qualified employees are selected.
