<p>Title: Mental Health Counselor</p> <p>Department: Center for Counseling and Wellness Services/ Student Affairs</p> <p>Summary/Objective</p> <p>The Mental Health Counselor is a licensed clinician who provides students with a broad range of mental health services, including individual counseling, group counseling, crisis intervention, and outreach programming. This position plays a vital role in supporting student well-being and success by offering inclusive, evidence-based mental health services tailored to the developmental needs of a diverse college student population. The Mental Health Counselor collaborates closely with campus partners to promote a culture of wellness and resilience.</p> <p>Essential Functions</p> <p>Clinical Services</p> <ul> <li>Provide short-term individual counseling and therapeutic support to students with a variety of presenting concerns. </li><li>Conduct intake assessments, formulate treatment plans, and manage a caseload of students in compliance with legal and ethical guidelines. </li><li>Provide crisis intervention and suicide risk assessments for students in distress. </li><li>Maintain accurate, confidential clinical documentation and case records. </li><li>Offer counseling services in person and through teletherapy as appropriate. </li></ul> <p>Outreach & Education</p> <ul> <li>Develop and implement psychoeducational programming on mental health, wellness, and coping skills. </li><li>Represent Counseling and Wellness Services at campus events such as orientation, open houses, health fairs, etc. </li><li>Provide consultation and resources to faculty, staff, and families as needed to support student mental health. </li></ul> <p>Campus Collaboration</p> <ul> <li>Work closely with Health Services, Residential Life, Title IX, Accessibility Services, and other student support areas to provide coordinated care and referrals. </li><li>Participate in Student Affairs, Health and Wellness team meetings, Early Intervention meetings, and Threat Assessment meetings to align services with student needs and campus priorities. </li></ul> <p>Professional Practice</p> <ul> <li>Stay current with continuing education and maintain licensure as state regulations require. </li><li>Engage in clinical supervision if provisionally licensed or as required. </li><li>Contribute to developing a welcoming, inclusive, and trauma-informed counseling environment. </li></ul> <p>Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned</p> <p>Competencies</p> <ul> <li>Ethical, professional clinical practice. </li><li>Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. </li><li>Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced campus environment. </li><li>Capacity to respond calmly and effectively in crisis situations. </li><li>Knowledge of various treatment modalities and counseling techniques. </li><li>Familiarity with the DSM V TR. </li></ul> <p>Supervisory Responsibility</p> <p>This position may have no supervisory responsibility or may supervise an intern from a college counseling program, or an associate counselor.</p> <p>Work Environment</p> <p>Normal office environment.</p> <p>Position Type/Expected Hours of Work</p> <p>This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. Hours will be determined by the Director of Health and Wellness Services but will include at least 40 hours weekly of hours present in the center. At least one evening per week in the center may be required.</p> <p>Occasional weekend work may be required as job duties demand.</p> <p>Travel</p> <p>No travel is expected for this position.</p> <p>Required Qualifications</p> <p>Required Education, Experience and Licensing</p> <ul> <li>Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Clinical Counseling Psychology. </li><li>Full Licensure or ability to obtain full licensure in the State of NC including LCMHC, LCSE or LCMHCA. If applicable, supervision for LCMHCA towards hours may be available. </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <p>Additional Preferred Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Minimum of two years of relevant clinical experience, preferably with adolescents or young adults. </li><li>Ability to provide supervision for associate-level clinicians, if applicable. </li><li>Basic to intermediate knowledge and applied experience with trauma-informed counseling approaches. </li><li>Familiarity with the mental health needs of college students, including traditional and non-traditional populations. </li><li>Demonstrated ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds. </li><li>Understanding of developmental considerations for both traditional and non-traditional students. </li><li>Intermediate experience with office productivity software and teletherapy protocol. </li><li>Specific interest in working with college student population. </li><li>Ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment. </li></ul> <p>Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
