<p>The Instructor IV position is responsible for teaching patrons 15 years and older in a variety of enrichment programs. This position will plan and lead the classes. Classes are recreational-based and may be educational and/or activity-related. Recreation instructor staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants. This position is classified as safety-sensitive due to the nature of the work. Employees in this position may be subject to random drug testing and/or heightened supervision per the personnel policies and rules.</p> <p>The full salary range for this position is stated above. This position works toward the accomplishment of the department's mission: Together we create exceptional opportunities for a vibrant community with a commitment to nature, wellness and literacy.</p> <p>GENERAL COMPETENCIES</p> <p>Job Specific - Every employee in this position must be able to:</p> <ul> <li>Understand and carry out oral and written instructions </li><li>Relate well with patrons of all ages </li><li>Respond calmly, quickly and effectively to emergency situations </li><li>Provide proper authority to children </li><li>Deal tactfully with the public and establish effective working relationships with other employees </li><li>Demonstrate knowledge in educational/recreational curriculum development </li><li>Establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with coworkers, participants and recreation facility guests </li><li>Provide effective, courteous customer service </li><li>Demonstrate creativity </li><li>Demonstrate self-motivation </li><li>Maintain a safe recreational atmosphere for participants </li><li>Follow the City's policies, rules and regulations on conduct and safety at the recreation facilities </li><li>Instruct enrichment activities and programs </li></ul> <p>All employees are expected to provide excellent customer service, communicate in an effective manner both verbally and in writing, display professionalism and integrity, work efficiently, effectively and accurately, work independently and as part of a team, take initiative, solve problems, display good judgment, take ownership for delivering a high-quality product or service, have regular and punctual attendance, and effectively handle emergency situations.</p> <p>Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks</p> <ul> <li>Plans and organizes class activities </li><li>Provides a safe environment for patrons 15 years and older </li><li>Provides fundamental instruction on enrichment programs </li><li>Keeps class moving at an appropriate pace </li><li>Instructs and/or assists instruction of various recreational and/or educational programs </li><li>Sets up all equipment/supplies before class and cleans up after class </li><li>Provides good customer service to patrons </li><li>Monitors participants and enforces rules, regulations, and safety precautions to prevent accidents </li><li>Actively participates in all cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting procedures of all classroom supplies, furniture, etc., on a daily basis </li><li>Maintains regular and punctual attendance </li></ul> <p>Other Duties and Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li>Attends staff meetings and trainings </li><li>Ensures classroom, materials, and equipment are clean, well-maintained, and safe at all times </li><li>Administers first aid and CPR as necessary </li><li>Promotes the City of Westminster in a positive aspect to patrons and the community </li><li>Reviews instructional content and methods to assess strengths and weaknesses, and to develop recommendations for course revision, development, or elimination </li></ul> <p>Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion.</p> <p>Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications</p> <p>Required:</p> <ul> <li>Must be at least 18 years old </li><li>Two (2) years of experience teaching American Sign Language </li><li>Teaching experience working with people of all ages or work in similar settings </li><li>First Aid, CPR and AED certification within 30 days of hire </li></ul> <p>Preferred:</p> <p>Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.</p> <p>Physical Requirements</p> <p>This position requires a moderate degree of physical stamina and strength, including the ability to:</p> <ul> <li>Frequently stand, sit and walk through a multi-level facility </li><li>Occasionally squat, bend, kneel, twist, climb, balance and reach over head </li><li>Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to 50 pounds </li><li>Frequently use hands and fingers for fine manipulation; occasionally use light and firm grasp </li><li>Frequently see objects up close to perform office tasks and far away to observe activity for safety hazards or problems </li><li>Constantly use hearing to interact with guests and staff and recognize trouble outside of view </li><li>Occasionally use sufficient physical strength, stamina and agility to perform emergency work in various capacities </li></ul> <p>WORKING CONDITIONS</p> <p>Work is mostly performed indoors, with some outdoor activities included. At times, there may be exposure to periods of high activity as well as exposure to outdoor weather conditions including summer sun and temperatures that could exceed 100 degrees. Indoor and outdoor work is performed in a high public use, multilevel recreation facility where loud noise and multiple events and activities at one time may cause a distraction. Exposure to periods of high activity and stress under demanding conditions. The position requires a great deal of communication with City employees, the public, and outside agencies.</p> <p>Required Materials and Equipment</p> <p>Recreation equipment, arts and crafts materials, technology such as iPhones, iPads, and/or AV equipment.</p> <p>PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the United States and must successfully pass a criminal background check, reference check, and substance screen.
