<p>The Setnor School of Music within the College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks Part-Time Instructor to teach Applied Music - Trombone Lessons, during the Fall and Spring Semesters, 2025-26.</p> <p>Artist/Part-Time Instructor of Jazz/Commercial Trombone Lessons:Private instruction in jazz performance techniques, including jazz styles, jazz music reading, jazz improvisational techniques, and combo and large ensemble performance skills.</p> <p>About The College of Visual and Performing Arts</p> <p>The College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University is committed to the education of cultural leaders who will engage and inspire audiences through performance, visual art, design, scholarship, and commentary. To learn more about the college, our distinguished faculty, and our program, please visit our websites at www.syr.edu, www.vpa.syr.edu.</p> <p>Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>A minimum of a master's degree in music (jazz or commercial trombone performance) or equivalent experience preferred. </li><li>Experience teaching studio trombone at the collegiate level. </li><li>Jazz/Commercial Music Performance credentials. </li><li>Significant piano skills required including the ability to accompany trombone students on piano when delivering instruction. </li><li>Ability to implement the use of music notation into private lesson instruction for the purpose of creating charts for student performance. </li><li>Background and ability to demonstrate the use of music notation software (Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore, Noteflight) to assist with meeting students' notation requirements in lessons. </li></ul> <p>Job Specific Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Strong attention to detail. </li><li>Knowledge of course content. </li><li>Demonstrated pedagogical ability. </li><li>Ability to relate well in a classroom and one-on-one environment with college-level students. </li><li>Preference will be given to applicants who are able to fulfill multiple positions within the Setnor School of Music. </li></ul> <p>Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li>Being present and instructing weekly lessons during Fall and Spring semesters. </li><li>Set up lesson schedule. </li><li>Collaborate to build and maintain the trombone studio. </li><li>Develop and/or update a class syllabus. </li><li>Prepare student assignments. </li><li>Maintain regularly scheduled office hours. </li><li>Present instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course. </li><li>Meet all designated class periods. </li><li>If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. </li><li>You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class. </li><li>Participate in end-of-semester juries. </li><li>Participate in fall/spring audition days, including review of on-line music audition materials for assigned prospective students. </li><li>Submit completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to university regulations. </li><li>Grade student assignments and exams in timely manner. </li><li>Provide departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations. </li><li>Build a positive rapport with students and other faculty. </li><li>Support student performances at music events where possible. </li></ul> <p>Physical Requirements</p> <p>Not Applicable</p> <p>Tools/Equipment</p> <p>Not Applicable</p> <p>Application Instructions</p> <p>In addition to completing an online application, please attach a resume/curriculum vitae and cover letter.</p>
