<p>Job Description:</p> <p>Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by leading and developing the Regimental Band, the nation's oldest collegiate band, and provides training oversight for the Grenadiers (jazz band), Choraleers, Pipes and Drum Unit, and String Ensemble. Fosters a positive learning environment that promotes Norwich University's Guiding Values and the leader attributes essential for cadet development, academic success, and personal growth. This is a uniformed staff position with the rank of major in the Vermont State Militia.</p> <p>Teaches as an Adjunct Faculty for the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Global Humanities, teaching Applied Music (String Ensemble, Pipes and Drums), Regimental Band, and Campus Choraleers. Faculty duties include developing syllabi, maintaining course Brightspace pages, and assessing student performance.</p> <p>Essential Functions</p> <ul> <li>Directs and conducts rehearsals for the Regimental Band, Concert Band, Campus Choirs, and Bugler Details. </li><li>Provides training assistance to specialty ensembles. </li><li>Leads on-campus and off-campus performances (minimum of four annually). </li><li>Maintains and acquires music, instruments, and equipment. </li><li>Trains students to perform at a professional level. </li><li>Coordinates joint performances with specialty units and community organizations. </li><li>Engages guest artists and accompanists as needed. </li><li>Travels with select students to the Military Band Festival and other events. </li><li>Manages travel logistics, billeting, and per diem distribution. </li><li>Serves as travel cardholder and maintain expense accountability. </li><li>Manages and tracks the band's operating budget. </li><li>Designs and implements a training plan and marketing strategy to support recruiting, esprit de corps, and alumni engagement. </li><li>Collaborates with alumni and community partners to enhance performance opportunities. </li><li>Approves and schedules ceremonial support requests. </li><li>Collaborates with the Deputy Commandant and Director of Operations and Training to support Corps of Cadets ceremonies. </li><li>Supports Enrollment Management and Admissions with ceremonial music for arrival days and open houses. </li><li>Partners with Development and Alumni Relations for events such as Homecoming, Family Weekend, and special ceremonies. </li><li>Coordinates musical support for ROTC, Convocation, and Commencement events. </li><li>Promotes student learning and retention strategies. </li><li>Ensures students utilize available academic support services. </li><li>Engages cadet and civilian leaders in supporting the academic success of their subordinates. </li><li>Develops leaders of character who live by the University's Guiding Values. </li><li>Models ethical behavior and sound judgment. </li><li>Coaches, counsels, and mentors students while enforcing University policies and regulations. </li><li>Promotes physical fitness and wellness. </li><li>Uses the EAB alert system to identify and assist at-risk cadets. </li><li>Encourages healthy living and the avoidance of high-risk behaviors. </li><li>Maintains an environment promoting ethical behavior, wellness, and academic achievement. </li><li>Develops leadership skills in self and others. </li><li>Administers minor disciplinary actions. </li><li>Serves as Student Affairs Duty Officer (SADO) on a rotational basis in the evening and on weekends to ensure proper supervision and authority of an around-the-clock nature. </li></ul> <p>Other Functions</p> <ul> <li>Assesses the performance of direct reports and provides frequent feedback to optimize their performance. </li><li>Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information. </li><li>Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner. </li><li>Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups or other designated bodies as assigned. </li><li>Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software. </li><li>Speaks, reads and writes in English. </li><li>Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device. </li><li>Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor. </li></ul> <p>Requirements:</p> <ul> <li>Masters degree required. Advanced degree preferred </li><li>5 years of relevant experience. Military organization preferred. </li><li>Extensive instrumental and teaching experience required; vocal experience preferred. </li><li>Strong written and oral communication skills. </li><li>Ability to relate to, understand, and mentor college students and work effectively with families. </li><li>Commitment to cadet growth, wellness, and retention. </li><li>Skilled in leadership development, counseling, training management, and conflict resolution. </li><li>Collaborative and respectful team player. </li><li>Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook). </li><li>Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 25 pounds; travel outdoors to various parts of the campus; march in military-style unit. </li><li>Able to maintain a professional military appearance in accordance with Army Regulation 670-1. </li><li>Work some early morning, evening and weekend hours, and be on-call throughout the night when acting as Student Affairs Duty Officer. </li><li>Travel nationally or internationally. </li></ul> <p>Environmental Conditions</p> <ul> <li>Indoor work at a computer workstation and rehearsal room, outdoor work during practices, ceremonies, and parades. </li><li>Medium level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations and temperature changes. </li></ul> <p>Additional Information:</p> <p>Norwich University is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to providing a positive education and work environment that recognizes and respects the dignity of all students, faculty and staff.
