<p>READING PUBLIC SCHOOLS</p> <p>READING, MASSACHUSETTS</p> <p>Position: Middle School Health Teacher</p> <p>Department: Coolidge and Parker Middle Schools</p> <p>Reports to: Building Administrator</p> <p>Approved by: Thomas Milaschewski, Ed. D.</p> <p>Revision Date: May 2025</p> <p>Position Overview:</p> <p>The Middle School Health Teacher will deliver a comprehensive, standards-based health education curriculum to students in grades 6-8, at the Coolidge and Parker middle schools. This role promotes healthy decision-making and lifelong wellness while aligning instruction with the Massachusetts Comprehensive Health Curriculum Framework. The ideal candidate fosters a safe and inclusive learning environment and is skilled in addressing a wide range of physical, social, and emotional health topics.</p> <p>Key Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate lessons based on the Massachusetts Health and Physical Education Frameworks and National Health Education Standards (NHES). </li><li>Teach units on physical health, mental and emotional wellness, human growth and development, nutrition, substance abuse prevention, personal safety, and social-emotional skills. </li><li>Create a classroom environment that supports equity, inclusivity, and respect for diverse backgrounds and perspectives. </li><li>Use a variety of instructional strategies and assessments to meet the needs of all learners. </li><li>Collaborate with school counselors, nurses, physical education staff, and families to support a coordinated approach to student wellness. </li><li>Maintain appropriate confidentiality when addressing sensitive topics and student needs. </li><li>Participate in district- and school-level professional development and initiatives. </li><li>Communicate regularly and effectively with families and caregivers. </li><li>Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, grades, and progress reports. </li><li>Uphold all state and federal laws related to student wellness, health education, and mandated reporting. </li></ul> <p>Required Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree in Health Education, Public Health, or a related field </li><li>Valid Massachusetts DESE teaching license in Health/Family & Consumer Sciences (grades 5-12) </li><li>Understanding of Massachusetts state standards for health education </li><li>Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching practices </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Master's degree in Health Education or related discipline </li><li>Experience teaching middle school students in a public school setting </li><li>Experience with inclusive and trauma-informed instructional practices </li><li>CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain) </li></ul> <p>Core Competencies:</p> <ul> <li>Strong knowledge of adolescent development and student-centered pedagogy </li><li>Ability to engage students in sensitive and meaningful health-related conversations </li><li>Commitment to creating a safe, equitable, and affirming classroom culture </li><li>Excellent communication and collaboration skills with students, families, and colleagues </li><li>Organizational skills and adaptability in a dynamic school environment </li></ul> <p>Qualified candidates, please apply by submitting a resume and cover letter on or before the preferred application date of June 1, 2025.
