<p>The Fire Arson Investigator performs responsible and difficult work conducting investigations and law enforcement to determine the origin and circumstances of fires, explosions, and deaths. Performs related duties as required. </p> <ul> <li>This position requires on-call availability and the ability to respond to work needs on short notice, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.* </li><li>Conducts fire and arson investigations. </li><li>Examines fire scenes to determine fire origin and cause. </li><li>Responds to radio messages or telephone instructions and appears at scenes of disorder or crime. </li><li>Investigates and prepares reports on accidents, offenses, and damage to property. </li><li>Makes arrests, writes search warrants and subpoenas, issues citations. </li><li>Appears in court as the arresting investigator. </li><li>Photographs and sketches fire scenes and gathers evidence for laboratory testing. </li><li>May act as a coordinator of law enforcement personnel at fire scene. </li><li>Determines financial conditions of owners, tenants, and leases of damaged property. </li><li>Prepares and reviews a variety of records and reports such as insurance reports, detailed investigation reports, expense records, statistical reports, as well as any other that may help in investigation. </li><li>Operates and maintains a variety of equipment and vehicles such as cameras, fingerprint equipment, firearms, polygraph equipment, and motor vehicles. </li><li>Prepares reports detailing results of fire investigations. </li><li>Attends training. </li></ul> <p>AUTHORIZATION TO CARRY FIREARM</p> <p>Fire Arson Investigator may be authorized to carry a firearm in the course of employment with the Nashville Fire Department. Must obtain required Commission on Peace Officer Service and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification to carry a firearm.</p> <p>High School Diploma and two (2) years experience in fire fighting, fire prevention, arson investigation, building codes enforcement, or related emergency/law enforcement experience.</p> <p> </p> <ul> <li>Associate's Degree in Fire Science or related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the requirement listed above.* </li></ul> <p>Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.</p> <p>LICENSE REQUIRED</p> <p>Valid Driver License </p> <p>National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI) or International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) certification within one year of appointment. </p> <p>Additional Requirements:</p> <p>P.O.S.T Certified or</p> <p>P.O.S.T Certified within (1) year of appointment - May be extended due to availability of police academy.</p> <p>Must meet NFPA Standard 1582 Medical Requirements for Fire Fighters.</p> <p>Shall meet such physical requirements as shall be prescribed by the civil service commission for Nashville Police Officers.</p> <p> </p> <ul> <li>Failure to meet the certification /requirements within the one (1) year period may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. </li></ul> <p>Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.</p> <ul> <li>P.O.S.T. certified. </li><li>Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and ordinances. </li><li>Knowledge of crime prevention and law enforcement policies and procedures. </li><li>Knowledge of police codes and radio transmission procedures. </li><li>Knowledge of court room procedures. </li><li>Ability to read and understand laws, regulations, police literature, and departmental rules, policies and procedures. </li><li>Ability to make fire origin and cause determinations. </li><li>Ability to maintain records and write detailed reports. </li></ul> <p>We are an equal opportunity employer that values diversity at all levels.
