It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC's institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.</p> <p>Tutors provide academic support to increase student academic achievement by meeting with students to clarify learning objectives and outcomes and work on study skills. Tutors serve as a supplement to classroom or online teaching. Tutors assist faculty, deans, and the Learning Assistance Supervisor in supporting the student success initiatives of Tidewater Community College.</p> <p>Functional Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Meet with students in a one-to-one, small-group, drop-in, or online tutoring format(s) to provide learning assistance in mathematics. </li><li>Tutor students in basic computer literacy to include accessing student email, creating and saving documents and other file types, and navigating Canvas. </li><li>Help with developing study strategies (textbooks, handbooks, online resources, etc.) for students requesting tutoring services. </li><li>Participate in team meetings, tutor-training sessions, and professional development training. </li><li>Partner with instructors to offer outreach-learning opportunities in the classroom and team up to offer course-relevant workshops. </li><li>Maintain familiarity with campus resources available to students. </li><li>Maintain a resourceful supply of course-relevant handouts in learning assistance centers. </li><li>Demonstrate patience, encouragement, and empathy to students having difficulty. </li><li>Assist with additional duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Significant knowledge of the concepts taught in PreCalculus I and II, Statistics I, and higher-level Calculus. </li><li>Must have obtained an "A" or "B" grade in the course(s) for which tutoring will be performed. Effective oral, written, and technical communication skills. </li><li>Ability to contextualize transferable academic study techniques and learning strategies into collaborative learning sessions. </li><li>Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA. </li><li>Ability to work independently and as a team member. </li><li>Experience providing excellent customer service to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds. </li><li>Demonstrated experience with responsibility, reliability, and punctuality. </li></ul> <p>Additional Considerations:</p> <p>Previous experience working in a tutoring position</p>
