The resident's experience will involve working closely with attending neuropsychologists completing both outpatient and inpatient neuropsychological assessments with children and adults at either the downtown Tampa outpatient center (STC building) or at USF Affiliated Hospital, including Tampa General Hospital. Residents will work with a broad number of neuropsychological and psychological measures. Focused experiences are provided in the neuropsychology of epilepsy, bedside neurobehavioral assessment on an inpatient rehab and neurological care unit.

Strengths of the residency program include the opportunity to work with a highly diverse patient population including (but not limited to) patients with epilepsy, cerebrovascular accidents, traumatic brain injuries/concussion, MCI/dementia, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, delirium/encephalopathies and other intracranial and neurodegenerative pathologies. Residents will gain additional experience working with patients who are bilingual/predominately Spanish-speaking and learn more about appropriate test/norm selection and cultural/diversity factors that may influence neuropsychological evaluations. Residents are also able to observe patients at different stages of recovery (acute to chronic). The Neuroscience Institute offers multiple opportunities for multidisciplinary clinical research spanning multiple neurological and systematic diseases. There are also multiple formal teaching seminars.

Focused experiences are available in the neurosurgical neuropsychology focus on epilepsy surgery as well as surgical evaluation for DBS and normal pressure hydrocephalus. Residents will also receive exposure to the neuropsychology of patients with psychogenic nonepileptic events. Residents will be exposed to outpatient neuropsychological evaluations, intracarotid methohexital (Wada's) testing, and assessments completed during long-term video monitoring on an inpatient consult service. Additional experiences, including observing aspects of neurological surgery including resection and stereotaxic surgical procedures as well as electrocorticography (ECoG) can be negotiated. Residents will be provided with hands on training in conducting Wada's testing with attending neuropsychologist as well as neurology and interventional radiology faculty. Residents will be expected to attend and participate in weekly Epilepsy case conferences. Residents will review germane neuropsychology literature as it pertains to each case. Goals include continued development of assessment skills, diagnosis, and recommendations. Functional neuroanatomy is discussed in depth. Training will emphasize gaining competence to identify neuropsychological features that, when combined with neurological and/or radiological data, have implications for predicting surgical outcome, and consulting in multidisciplinary treatment teams to provide input for neuropsychological indications and contra-indications for surgical treatment. Evidence-based neuropsychology practice is emphasized.

TRAINING EXPECTATIONS:

Perform about 2-3 days of outpatient neuropsychological evaluations each week (caseloads may vary but generally between 4-5 cases per week).
