<p>Join the team at Northern Illinois University dedicated to advancing innovative, high-quality learning experiences! The Instructional Design Team within the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) partners with faculty and departments across campus to support the design, development, and continuous improvement of online, hybrid, and flexible learning opportunities that promote educational excellence.</p> <p>The Instructional Designer provides multi-tiered instructional design support for credit-bearing courses, alternative credentials, and non-credit offerings. This position collaborates with faculty and academic units to apply program framework requirements, ensure quality standards, and design accessible, engaging, and inclusive learning experiences. In addition, the role supports the creation of revenue-generating learning opportunities and contributes to the development of NIU's online general education course bundle and other strategic online learning initiatives.</p> <p>Position Summary</p> <p>The Instructional Designer collaborates with faculty to ensure quality standards, design accessible learning experiences, and advance strategic initiatives including the online general education bundle and new credential opportunities. The Instructional Designer reports to the Director of Instructional Design and Development in the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL).</p> <p>Essential Duties and Responsibilities</p> <p>Contribute to CITL Instructional Design Support - 30%</p> <ul> <li>Collaborate with faculty, academic departments and staff to support the full lifecycle of instructional design for credit, non-credit, and microcredential courses. </li><li>Apply various learning theories, teaching strategies, instructional design models, best practices in online education, and integrating educational technologies to improve teaching effectiveness and student learning experience. </li><li>Manage course design projects for the entire course life cycle, including systematic refresh activities. </li></ul> <p>Create Learning Experiences for Adult Learners - 25%</p> <ul> <li>Collaborate with project collaborators to ensure courses and credentials meet university priorities, institutional policy, accreditation and compliance requirements, and metrics for student success and retention. </li><li>Support efforts for institutional initiatives around course innovation, online learning strategy, microcredential expansion, including participation in cross-functional collaborations. </li><li>Work with colleges to identify and design flexible, revenue generating learning experiences for adult and non-credit learners preparing to entry competitive career fields. </li><li>Design flexible learning structures that respect adult schedules and prior experience, while mapping learning objectives to professional outcomes. </li><li>Leverage artificial intelligence and subject matter expertise to build interactive modules, case studies, and simulations that align with real-world workplace practices. </li></ul> <p>Coordinate Program Level Design & Development - 20%</p> <ul> <li>Collaborate with the chairs, faculty, and staff to define program framework requirements. </li><li>Apply project and program-level design and development framework strategies for colleges, departments, and other units in developing online, hybrid courses or on-demand learning experiences. </li><li>Support the development of general education courses that meet graduation requirements for undergraduate online programs with and across different colleges. </li></ul> <p>Contribute to Quality Standards Assessment of All Online Courses - 15%</p> <ul> <li>Implement and maintain online quality standards and contribute to the quality standards assessment of all online courses and learning experiences. </li><li>Assure universal design principles are considered in creating media. </li></ul> <p>Collaborate with CITL Leadership - 10%</p> <ul> <li>Support the mission of CITL through various instructional design assignments. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree. </li><li>A total of one (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position. </li></ul> <p>Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.</p> <p>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service)</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects. </li><li>Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources. </li><li>Skill in analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems. </li><li>Skill in scheduling events, programs, and activities, as well as the work of others. </li><li>Skill in oral and written communication. </li><li>Ability to adjust actions in relation to others' actions. </li><li>Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. </li><li>Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense. </li><li>Ability to develop specific goals, plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish tasks. </li><li>Ability to work effectively with staff, the public, and outside constituency groups. </li><li>Ability to effectively plan, delegate, and supervise the work of others. </li><li>Ability to utilize various computer software packages, such as Accounting Software, query, etc. </li><li>Ability to work independently and exercise judgment in order to be able to analyze and investigate a variety of questions or problems. </li><li>Ability to analyze and develop guidelines, procedures, and systems. </li></ul> <p>Specialty Factors (Civil Service)</p> <p>None</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications (Civil Service)</p> <ul> <li>Master's degree or significant progress toward a master's degree in higher education, instructional design, online learning, or related field. </li><li>Two (2) years of experience in an instructional design role, working with subject matter experts to create online, hybrid, or blended learning courses or content using a learning or content management system or related experience to the hiring unit*. </li><li>One (1) year of professional experience coordinating complex instructional design projects involving multiple, distinct work products, multiple subject or content experts, and coordination with other designers, developers, and/or media specialists. </li><li>Knowledge of NIU's online academic degree-completion, graduate, and certificate programs. </li><li>Certification in Quality Matters or other similar course quality standards. </li><li>Excellent written and oral communication skills, planning and organizational abilities, problem solving skills and ability to work collaboratively and collegially. </li><li>Ability to apply instructional design theory to functional design concepts, practices and methods. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Required Qualifications (SPS)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Additional Requirements (SPS)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications (SPS)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Physical demands/requirements</p> <ul> <li>Regular office related duties </li><li>Sitting for extended periods of time </li><li>Using computer/electronic equipment for extended periods of time </li><li>Occasional lifting and moving items weighing up to 25 lbs </li></ul>
