<p>Who We Are </p> <p>The City of Beverly Hills has a long-standing reputation for providing superior customer service to residents, businesses, and visitors. This characteristic, combined with outstanding staff in all departments, has been a hallmark of success for this high performance organization. The municipal government (approximately 1,000 full-time and part-time employees) provides the highest quality safety services, recreational, municipal services, and physical environment. </p> <p>What We Do </p> <p>The Beverly Hills Fire Department is charged with the preservation of life and property within the Beverly Hills community. The dedicated men and women of the Beverly Hills Fire Department protect approximately 34,000 residents and an estimated 150,000-200,000 daily visitors in a 5.7 square mile area. Highly-trained and properly equipped firefighters respond to fires, rescues, medical emergencies, chemical releases, and natural disasters. The Beverly Hills Fire Department operates the city's three fire stations and responds to over 7,000 incidents per year. The Fire Department's reputation for exemplary service is underscored by its Class I rating from the Insurance Services Office, an elite distinction carried by only a few fire departments in the nation. </p> <p>Ideal Candidate </p> <p>The Fire Inspector works under the direction and supervision of the Deputy Fire Marshal. The Fire Inspector performs a wide variety of technical work in the inspection, analysis and application of fire protection and prevention practices and principles. This position requires the incumbent to work primarily outside of the office and directly in the community thus the ideal candidate is expected to be adaptable and he/she should possess exceptional customer service skills. The ideal candidate is responsive and proactive when addressing the needs of the community while simultaneously maintaining compliance with codes and regulations. Candidates for this position must possess a strong commitment to public service, the ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion and act with integrity. The ideal candidate possesses good communication, attention to detail, and interpersonal skills. Please note that the incumbent in this position will work a 4/10 schedule. Overtime may be assigned as needed during nights and weekends.</p> <p>Supervision Exercised and Received</p> <p>Receives general supervision from the Deputy Fire Marshal.</p> <p>Selection Process</p> <p>All applicants must submit clear, concise and complete information regarding their qualifications for the position, including responses to all supplemental questions. Responses such as "see resume" will not be accepted and will result in the disqualification of your application.</p> </li><li> <p>The supplemental questionnaire may be used as an assessment tool to determine the most qualified applicants for this position.</p> </li><li> <p>Oral Interview with Technical Exercises</p> </li><li> <p>The first interview is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, 2025.</p> </li></ul> <p>Background Investigation</p> <p>The final step of the selection process requires a thorough background investigation. The background investigation will include a comprehensive investigation of the candidate's background which includes, Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background check, education and employment history (including a credit, criminal and DMV review), personal statement, employment and personal reference check. </p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Verification: Applicants may be required to submit verification of qualifying education and experience at any point during the recruitment and selection process. Note: Falsifying one's education, training, or work experience or attempted deception on the application may result in disqualification for this and future job opportunities with the City of Beverly Hills.</p> <p>Disaster Service Workers: </p> <p>All City of Beverly Hills employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Enforce laws and ordinances pertaining to fire safety and prevention.</p> <p>Perform general and specialized inspections, e.g. fire and life safety plan review inspections, sprinkler and fire alarm inspections, and hazardous materials permit inspections.</p> <p>Conduct fire cause determinations at fire scenes as assigned to establish origin and cause circumstances of fires; secure and preserve evidence, and testify in court.</p> <p>Conduct building plan reviews and assist with final building inspections; consult with building contractors as required.</p> <p>Perform fire safety permit inspections for issuance of special permits.</p> <p>Inspect public displays or gatherings.</p> <p>Inspect installation and removal of underground and above-ground fuel facilities and the storage and handling of flammable, combustible, toxic corrosive, and other hazardous materials.</p> <p>Investigate citizen complaints to initiate enforcement activities.</p> <p>Review findings of inspections with owner/occupants and explain requirements for meeting compliance with codes and regulations; conduct follow-up inspections for violation abatements, as assigned, maintain records of findings, prepares reports and complaints, and files with City prosecutor. May act as liaison between the fire prevention bureau and the City prosecutor.</p> <p>Maintain records and databases; prepare correspondence, reports, and public information material. </p> <p>Assist in developing and maintaining and statistical data pertinent to Fire Prevention Division activities.</p> <p>Assist fire suppression personnel in inspection functions and problem inspections; provide follow-up inspections to suppression personnel.</p> <p>Assume responsibility for a variety of fire prevention programs such as fire sprinkler retrofit, brush abatement, haz-mat, lock boxes, iron bars, fire drills, witnessing Title 19, 5-Year Testing, and Christmas tree inspections.</p> <p>Plan, coordinate, and implement a variety of department events including scheduling, maintaining supplies, determining location, and related duties.</p> <p>Assist with the development, coordination, and marketing of public education and outreach activities. Educate public on fire safety issues, speak to large groups, and present fire prevention program information at fairs, schools, and other special events.</p> <p>Assist new or existing staff in learning departmental practices and protocols, methods, and procedures.</p> <p>Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.</p> <p>Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect.</p> <p>Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and communication.</p> <p>Performs related duties as assigned.Experience and Training</p> <p>Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:</p> <p>Experience:</p> <p>Three years' experience in performing fire inspection duties. </p> <p>Training:</p> <p>An Associates degree from an accredited college. </p> <p>License and Certificate</p> <p>Possession of a valid California driver's license.</p> <p>Fire Inspector I certification through the International Code Council within 12 months of appointment.</p> <p>CAL FIRE/OSFM CFSTES Certification Fire Inspector I within one year of appointment.</p> <p>PC 832 certification</p> <p>CAL FIRE/OSFM CFSTES Fire Investigator course work and/or certification is desirable.</p> <p>Knowledge of:</p> <p>Local, state, and federal statutes, codes, rules and regulations related to fire prevention and structural safety, including California Fire Code and California Building Code.</p> <p>Basic building construction principles.</p> <p>Fire prevention systems (alarm and extinguishing) and detection systems design and testing.</p> <p>Blueprint reading, and computer skills.</p> <p>Principles of flammable, explosive, and toxic hazardous materials storage and use.</p> <p>Principles of electricity.</p> <p>Fire cause, determination principles and practices of investigative and interviewing techniques.</p> <p>Physical aspects of fire behavior.</p> <p>Ability to:</p> <p>On a continuous basis, know and understand all aspects of the job; intermittently analyze work papers, reports, and special projects; identify and interpret technical and numerical information; observe and problem solve operational and technical policy and procedures.</p> <p>Interpret fire code, building code, laws and ordinances and determine appropriate enforcement action.</p> <p>Communicate clearly and concisely, graphically, orally, and in writing. </p> <p>Perform fire cause determination, assist with, or conduct fire investigations.</p> <p>Establish and maintain effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work.</p> <p>Express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, to groups and individuals.</p> <p>Interpret building plans and read blueprints.</p> <p>Maintain proper records and reports of all activities.</p> <p>Conduct thorough inspections and apply fire codes consistently, fairly, and accurately.</p> <p>Recognize potential or existing fire hazards and make appropriate recommendations for abatement.</p> <p>Conduct inspections and be exposed to smoke and/or hazardous environment.</p> <p>Operate and use standard office equipment including computers and applicable software, databases, and web-based programs.</p> <p>Intermittently, review and evaluate documents related to department operations; observe, identify, and problem-solve office operations and procedures; understand, interpret, and explain department policies and procedures; explain operations and problem-solve issues for the public and with staff.</p> <p>Use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority.</p> <p>Operate and use standard office equipment including computers and applicable software applications.</p> <p>Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.</p> <p>Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties.</p> <p>Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.</p>
