<p>Title: Workforce Adjunct - Fleet Maintenance</p> <p>Agency: Northern VA Community College</p> <p>Location: Prince William - 153</p> <p>FLSA: Exempt</p> <p>Hiring Range: The rate per instructional hour will be commensurate with education and relevant or teaching experience</p> <p>Full Time or Part Time: Part Time</p> <p>Additional Detail</p> <p>Job Description:</p> <p>General Description:</p> <p>NOVA Workforce Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in the designated discipline/field of study to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Teaching may include a variety of formats: face-to-face, remote and online. The teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. The adjunct faculty contract contains no expectation or guarantees of continued employment.</p> <p>Duties and Tasks:</p> <ul> <li>Competency-Based Instruction: Deliver fast-paced, hands-on training for adult learners. Focus on practical skills like load bank testing, transfer switch operation, and governor adjustments. </li><li>Industry Alignment: Ensure all training aligns with the latest EPA standards and manufacturer specifications (e.g., Cummins, CAT, Kohler) </li><li>Lab Leadership: Manage the skilled trades lab, ensuring all students adhere to OSHA and NFPA 70E safety standards during high-voltage exercises. </li><li>Student Outcomes: Assist students in preparing for EGSA (Electrical Generating Systems Association) or related industry certifications. </li></ul> <p>Student Support and Assessment:</p> <ul> <li>Provide timely and constructive feedback to students. </li><li>Assess student learning through various methods, including practical demonstrations and written exams. </li><li>Promote student success through effective communication and support. </li></ul> <p>Technical Expertise</p> <ul> <li>Demonstrated expertise in diesel engine theory, alternator system design, and code-compliant installation techniques, including fuel delivery, exhaust/venting systems, and NFPA 110 standards for emergency power. </li><li>Demonstrated proficiency in using advanced diagnostic tools, including digital multimeters, load banks, and manufacturer-specific software (e.g., Caterpillar ET or Cummins Insite). </li><li>Continuous Industry Currency: Committed to staying current with advancements in Tier 4 emission technologies, digital control systems, and renewable energy integration. </li></ul> <p>Professional Development:</p> <ul> <li>Maintain professional currency in the field. </li><li>Participate in professional development opportunities. </li><li>Contribute to a collaborative and positive learning environment. </li></ul> <p>Other Duties:</p> <ul> <li>Maintain equipment and supplies in the lab. </li><li>Assist with student scheduling and advising. </li><li>Participate in college events and activities. </li></ul> <p>Essential Functions:</p> <p>As a part of the primary responsibility to provide quality instruction, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; and adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations.</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications:</p> <p>KSAs:</p> <ul> <li>Comprehensive knowledge of light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicle systems including engines (diesel and gasoline), transmissions, braking systems (air/hydraulic), suspension, steering, and electrical systems. </li><li>Knowledge of OSHA standards, DOT/FMCSA regulations, EPA guidelines, and shop safety practices (lockout/tagout, PPE, hazardous materials). </li><li>Understanding of PM schedules, fleet lifecycle management, DOT inspection requirements, and maintenance compliance. </li><li>Understanding of adult learning principles, particularly for students from diverse backgrounds or those transitioning careers. </li><li>Demonstrate and teach repair, diagnostics, and maintenance procedures in a lab/shop environment. </li><li>Perform and teach troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical faults across Class 1-8 vehicles. </li><li>Strong classroom management skills, with the ability to maintain engagement in a 4-to-8 hour "boot camp" format. </li><li>Use training platforms (e.g., LMS like Canvas), diagnostic software, and simulation tools. </li><li>Ability to connect classroom instruction to real-world fleet operations and job-site expectations. </li><li>Adjust instruction methods based on student needs, industry changes, and equipment availability. </li><li>Stay current with evolving vehicle technologies and integrate them into training. </li><li>Work with program leadership, employers, and partners to align training with workforce needs. </li><li>Working knowledge of OSHA standards, DOT/FMCSA regulations, and shop safety procedures. </li><li>Strong verbal and written communication skills </li><li>Ability to effectively engage with students, staff, and industry partners. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Work Experience:</p> <ul> <li>Experience with fleet environments (public sector, transit, logistics, or construction) </li><li>High school diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred but not mandatory if offset by extensive field experience. </li><li>ASE Certifications (T-Series for Medium/Heavy Trucks), CDL (Class A or B preferred) </li><li>Experience implementing or adhering to safety programs and inspection protocols </li></ul> <p>Additional Considerations:</p> <ul> <li>Practical working experience in the subject field/industry and related. </li><li>Experience teaching "boot camp" style training course </li><li>Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment. </li><li>Experience teaching students from diverse language backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency. </li><li>Experience working with adult learners. </li></ul>
