<p>General Job Information</p> <p>Job Summary:</p> <p>This position is located in the D.C. Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS), Secure Programs, Food Division. The mission of the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services is to give court-involved youth the opportunity to become more productive citizens by building on the strengths of youths and their families in the least restrictive, most homelike environment consistent with public safety.</p> <p>The incumbent serves as Food Preparation and Serving Supervisor (FPSS) with responsibilities for the daily food preparation, cooking and serving on two shifts for residents, staff and guests. The primary purpose of the position is to oversee and coordinate the daily operations of food preparation and service staff, ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency and to maintain compliance with health regulations while delivering consistent customer satisfaction through effective team supervision.</p> <p>Major Duties and Responsibilities</p> <p>The Food Preparation and Serving Supervisor (FPSS) Supervises and schedules food service personnel, including cooks, food service workers, and any youth trainees. Plans, organizes, and oversees the day-to-day food preparation, cooking and serving for two shifts (morning and afternoon). Ensures proper training, evaluation, and performance management of food service staff and youth trainees. Assures adequate on-the-job training is provided for employees at appropriate levels; solves employee grievances; evaluates performance; and recommends reassignments, promotions and disciplinary action. Maintains appropriate staffing levels to meet operational and safety needs, maintains efficiency and a high standard of service. Reassigns personnel and adjusts schedules to meet the needs of the facility, daily emergencies, and special demands. Participates in the interview process; and offers input in the selection of employees within the Food Division.</p> <p>The incumbent supervises and coordinates daily meal preparations and ensures meals meet USDA nutrition standards, and any state or local requirements. Ensures meals are culturally appropriate, age-appropriate, and aligned with any special dietary needs. Ensures timely delivery of meals in accordance with facility meal schedules. Monitors and maintains food and supply inventory, including ordering and receiving food products. Ensures proper storage and stock rotation (FIFO - First-In, First-Out method). Assists with food service budgeting, cost control, and prevention of waste. Collaborates with facility administrators, healthcare personnel, and dietitians to accommodate special diets. Prepares reports on meal service operations, inventory, compliance, and incidents as required. Participates in inspections, audits, and reviews from regulatory agencies. Attends meetings and participates in discussions on planning, implementing, and coordinating food services with other related programs and institutional functions. Generates production sheets, kitchen requisitions, re-capitulation of subsistence, and vendor ordered foods.</p> <p>Qualifications and Education</p> <p>Your qualifications will be evaluated against the following job elements:</p> <p>ABILITY TO LEAD AND SUPERVISE.</p> <p>Ability to maintain effective work practices, including keeping workspaces neat, clean and in order</p> <p>Ability to apply technical practices that are theoretical, precise, and artistic in nature</p> <p>Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (other than blueprints)</p> <p>Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment</p> <p>Knowledge of materials</p> <p>Dexterity and safety</p> <p>Licenses and Certifications</p> <p>Incumbent of this position must possess a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certificate.</p> <p>Work Environment</p> <p>The incumbent works primarily in the kitchen of juvenile correctional facilities.</p> <p>Other Significant Facts:</p> <p>Tour of Duty: Due to the nature of the responsibilities of this position, work hours are on a rotational basis to any of DYRS facilities, group homes, or service areas. This facility is a 24/7 operation. Shifts may vary. Rotational tour of work normally requiring rotation on each of two tours - AM, PM, - seven days per week, and holidays. This position is subject to mandated overtime.</p> <p>Pay Plan, Series and Grade: WS-7401-08</p> <p>Promotion Potential: No Known Promotion Potential</p> <p>Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union): This position is not a part of a Collective Bargaining Unit.</p> <p>Position Designation: The incumbent in this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel regulations, Suitability. This position has been designated as a safety-sensitive position. The position is subject to pre-employment drug testing, which includes testing for cannabis. Failing the drug test may result in disqualification even if applicant participates in a medical marijuana program.</p> <p>Essential Designation: This position has been designated as an Essential position under the provisions of District Personnel Manual Chapter 12. As such, your services may be required in emergency situations to perform crucial duties that are vital to the continuity of medical facilities, public safety, emergency services, and/or other crucial operations. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when most employees are dismissed early.
