<p>Introduction</p> <p>The City of New Haven is seeking a skilled and dependable Traffic Maintenance Worker II to support the installation, maintenance, and repair of essential traffic control devices. This position involves hands-on fieldwork to help ensure the safety and efficiency of the City's roadways. The ideal candidate will be experienced in maintenance operations, committed to safe work practices, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team</p> <p>PRIMARY FUNCTIONS</p> <p>This is skilled and limited supervisory work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices. The position involves both hands-on duties and limited oversight of assigned crew members in tasks such as traffic sign installation, pavement markings, and other roadway safety features. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Signs & Marker Leader and is reviewed for the quality and quantity of work by inspections and reports.</p> <p>TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</p> <p>Fabricates, installs, and maintains traffic control signs, posts, and related equipment. Operates trucks, lifts, paint machines, compressors, line stripers, power tools and other specialized equipment used in sign and pavement marking installation. Assists with installation of bus shelters, benches, and other street furniture. Sets up temporary traffic control devices (cones, barricades, signs) to ensure the safety of workers, pedestrians, and motorists during maintenance operations. Maintains inventory of supplies, tools, and equipment. Assembles equipment and materials. Assists in the layout and application of pavement traffic markings by measuring and marking. Completes required reports, including daily report forms and verbal reports. Ensures safe work practices and compliance with industry safety standards. Provides limited supervision and training to assigned crew members. May respond to emergency situations, such as storm damage, accidents, or vandalism, requiring immediate attention to traffic control devices. Performs related work as required.</p> <p>EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE</p> <p>Graduation from high school or vocational school; and 1 year general maintenance experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:</p> <p>KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES</p> <p>Knowledge of basic math skills. Some knowledge of the operation and uses of drills, cement breakers, generators, and related power equipment and tools. Some knowledge of traffic control standards and regulations. Some knowledge of safety hazards and industry safety standards. Ability to learn the standards and procedures for traffic control sign and marking installation. Ability to learn the use of road measuring devices and related equipment. Ability to perform heavy physical work in various conditions. Ability to work from written and oral instructions, sketches, and drawings. Ability to interpret maps, diagrams, and technical instructions related to traffic layouts and installations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public. Familiarity with Microsoft applications such as Word Excel and for creating documents, spreadsheets, and correspondence. Competency in using email clients (e.g., Outlook, Gmail) and calendar applications for scheduling and managing correspondence. Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective in high-pressure or rapidly changing situations. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, problem solve, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and sensitively in a diverse community, recognizing and respecting cultural differences, and fostering an inclusive environment.</p> <p>NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>Must maintain current Connecticut driver's license. This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 884, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. Bargaining agreements available to review HERE. General Funded hires into this class shall not be covered by Social Security but rather the City pension, contributing 9% of salary. The City of New Haven does not sponsor employment visas. All applicants must have current authorization to work in the U.S. without employer-sponsored visa support. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) an pre-employment background check, (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City's Drug Free Workplace Policy, and (3) a 90-day probationary period.
