<p>MUSIC TEACHER (SECONDARY) BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the school administrator and as part of a junior high or high school teaching assignment, teach one or more classes or music to students in grades 7-12, and assist in other school programs as assigned. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Teach concepts and skills in music education, in instrumental music and/or in choral music. Utilize course of study adopted by the Board of Education and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content, if available. E Instruct students in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study common to teachers, as specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. E Provide instruction by which pupils develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations, and the ability to make qualitative judgments about music. E Adapt music material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge pupils. Develop lesson plans. E Adapt the curriculum to the needs of the students. E Establish and maintain with the cooperation and aid of the school administration, standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment. E Indicate each student's progress in music knowledge and skills by report cards and interim progress reports. Will prepare letters of recommendation for scholarships, college applications, etc., when requested by the student or a representative of a higher educational institute. E Maintain professional competence through participation in in-service educational activities provided and supported by the District and in other professional growth activities selected by the teacher. E Encourage pupils to think independently and to express original ideas. Observe Code of Ethics (NEA and Title V). Other Duties and Responsibilities: Communicate with parents to interpret contemporary methods in teaching music and with parents and school counselors to discuss the individual student's progress. E Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems. E Attend and participate in faculty and District meetings. E Plan and coordinate the work of teacher aides or student teachers. E Assist in the supervision of pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day. Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a District level. Supply necessary attendance data. Share in the sponsorship and/or supervision of student activities. May select and requisition books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies and maintain required inventory records. Perform related duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's Degree with major or minor in music. Possession of a valid California credential authorizing service as a music teacher. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Secondary classroom work environment. Intermittent noise. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Seeing to monitor student classroom activities and read and select music to suit curriculum requirements. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate business machines and other instructional equipment. Hearing and speaking to exchange information related to musical requirements.</p> <p>Requirements / Qualifications</p>
