<p>Job Description:</p> <p>Title: Physics Laboratory Technician</p> <p>Unit: Part-Time Non-Unit Support Staff</p> <p>Department: Science</p> <p>Reports to: Dean of STEM</p> <p>Date: January 23, 2025</p> <p>General Summary: The part-time Physics Laboratory Technician provides technical support services to faculty and staff who teach Physics courses on the Lowell and Bedford Campuses and maintains a sanitary and efficient laboratory environment to promote student success. This knowledgeable individual performs administrative and laboratory work and includes maintaining inventory of laboratory equipment, materials and supplies, ordering new/replacement materials, maintaining/caring for laboratory equipment, setting up laboratory experiments and related equipment/supplies for labs, and ensuring laboratory safety and proper disposal of any hazardous wastes.</p> <p>Duties and Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Prepares materials and sets up all laboratory experiments and demonstrations in the Physics area accurately and on time. </li><li>Dismantles laboratory experiments and demonstrations, checks and returns equipment to storage in a timely manner. </li><li>Maintains the order, cleanliness, and safety of the laboratories and storage facilities. </li><li>Initiates orders for new/replacement supplies and equipment for Physics with the approval of the department chair. </li><li>Receives/stocks orders and processes receiving/invoicing documentation </li><li>Adjusts, maintains, calibrates and performs minor repairs to equipment using basic electronics skills; reports major repair needs or arranges for repairs according to established procedures. </li><li>Constructs and modifies apparatus as required. Improves on existing experiments and designs new experiments and equipment as needed. </li><li>Installs physics lab software, periodically updates lab computers and maintains interfaces, sensors and probes. </li><li>Maintains appropriate records for all purchase orders for orders and repair work on equipment. </li><li>Maintains an inventory of all supplies, materials and equipment, ensuring availability of supplies to perform laboratory activities. </li><li>Provides assistance or instruction to faculty in use of science equipment as needed </li><li>Responsible for safety protocols. Conducts the proper disposal of all laboratory waste, including biohazardous material coordinating with college Environmental Health and Safety Officer. </li><li>Performs administrative tasks associated with department activities such as lists, inventory reports, disposal records, service contracts, reports, forms, general correspondence, material safety data sheets, product information, laboratory manuals. </li><li>Interacts with various agencies/individuals to coordinate activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. </li><li>Follows OSHA safety procedures and maintain files of current MSDS sheets. </li><li>Collaborates with other science technicians to ensure appropriate disposal of waste. </li><li>Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of STEM or the Science Department Chair. </li></ul> <p>Requirements:</p> <ul> <li>One (1) year experience and/or training involving laboratory management/operations; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. </li><li>An Associate's degree or higher with a major in physics, medical technology, chemistry, bacteriology, food science and technology, environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, wastewater technology, oceanography or the biological sciences may be substituted for the required experience. </li><li>Knowledge of general laboratory techniques. </li><li>Experience in teaching or working with Physics equipment. </li><li>Experience with basic electronics repair including testing and soldering. </li><li>Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. </li><li>Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, veterans, and individuals with different academic preparation levels and varying physical and learning abilities. </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Bilingual skills a plus. </li></ul> <p>Additional Information:</p> <p>Salary Range: $23.92 per hour in accordance with the College's Part-Time Wage Schedule</p> <p>Location: Lowell and Bedford campuses</p> <p>Hours: 18.5 hours per week, schedule to be determined upon hire</p> <p>Expected Start Date: February 2025</p> <p>Application Deadline: This position will remain open until filled</p> <p>Application Instructions:</p> <p>All applicants must apply online by submitting:</p> <ul> <li>Cover Letter </li><li>Resume </li><li>Names and contact information for three (3) professional references </li></ul> <p>Pre-Employment Requirements:</p> <p>The College will not sponsor applicants for work visas.</p> <p>All offers of employment at Middlesex Community College are contingent upon clear results of a thorough background check.
