<p>Job Description:</p> <p>GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:</p> <p>The Accountant plays a critical role in assisting in the management of the financial health and integrity of the Berlin Public Schools. Under the direction of the Director of Finance and Operations, this position is responsible for performing professional accounting work, maintaining financial records, assisting with budget preparation, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing public school finance.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <ul> <li>Assists the Director of Finance and Operations in the preparation and maintenance of financial records, general ledgers, and journal entries in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines. </li><li>Manages the monthly reconciliation of bank statements, district accounts, and specialized student activity funds. </li><li>Coordinates the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for departmental review. </li><li>Assists the Director of Finance and Operations in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the District's annual operating budget. </li><li>Oversees financial tracking, compliance, and reporting for federal and state grants. </li><li>Serves as the primary backup for payroll and accounts payable departments. </li><li>Manages the accounts receivable process, including tuition, facility rentals, and state/federal reimbursements. </li><li>Manages inventory and fixed assets. </li><li>Serves as a point of contact for external and state auditors, preparing requested schedules, documentation for the annual audit. </li><li>Ensurescompliance with all Connecticut Department of Education financial reporting requirements. </li><li>Serves as the System Administrator for Frontline Time and Attendance, acting as the primary subject matter expert for campus users, troubleshooting technical issues, and performingpre-payroll auditsto ensure data integrity. </li><li>Evaluates and improves internal accounting procedures and workflows to enhance departmental efficiency and financial transparency. </li><li>Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance and Operations. </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field required.</p> </li><li> <p>Certifications: CSDE 085 Certification preferred, Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is a plus.</p> </li><li> <p>Experience: Minimum of 3 - 5 years of accounting experience. Experience in public school finance, municipal accounting, or fund accounting is preferred.</p> </li><li> <p>Technical Skills: Proficiency in modern ERP/financial software (e.g., Tyler School ERP-Pro, PowerSchool, MySchoolBucks) and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.</p> </li><li> <p>Knowledge: Strong understanding of GASB standards, fund accounting, and state/federal education grant regulations.</p> </li><li> <p>Soft Skills: Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial data to non-financial stakeholders, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse staff in a cooperative manner.</p> </li><li> <p>TO VIEW COMPLETE POSTING AND APPLY ONLINE, PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT WWW.BERLINSCHOOLS.ORG.
