<p>About the Job</p> <p>This position will be in a new lab in the Department of Radiation Oncology, within the Medical School, opening in September 2025. The principal investigator, Xiaojing Huang, is a physician-scientist who studies the impact of systemic metabolic physiology on cancer outcomes. There are two primary areas of research in the lab. The first is how adipose tissue responds to radiation to influence metabolic health and immune function in cancer patients. The second is investigating the mechanisms by which obesity influences cancer biology and response to treatment. The lab has a strong translational focus that bridges human subjects research and mechanistic molecular and cell biology using appropriate models.</p> <p>The candidate is expected to follow best research practices including careful documentation of experiments and data, effective communication to ensure safety and reliability, and following all relevant ethical and regulatory guidelines.</p> <p>Job Title: Lab Manager (Research Professional 5- Biomedical Research)</p> <p>Job Code: 9791BD</p> <p>FTE: 1.0</p> <p>Reports to: Xiaojing Huang, MD, PhD</p> <p>Work Arrangement: The position is expected to work primarily on-site. Your work location will be 425 River Parkway. The Department retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time.</p> <p>Responsibilities:</p> <p>75%: Design, perform, and analyze experiments</p> <ul> <li>Mammalian cell culture maintenance and experimentation with cancer lines, adipocytes, and immune cells, including both primary cell preparations and immortalized cell lines </li><li>Molecular cloning </li><li>Maintain a small mouse colony (~50 cages) with limited genotypes </li><li>Characterization of animal models of cancer and cancer treatment, including but not limited to: </li></ul> <ol> <li> <p>Injection of cancer cells into mice</p> </li><li> <p>Irradiation of mice using SARRP (Small Animal Radiation Therapy Platform)</p> </li><li> <p>Metabolic phenotyping of mice (e.g. glucose and insulin tolerance tests)</p> </li><li> <p>Mouse imaging</p> </li><li> <p>Dissection of euthanized animals to harvest tissues for molecular studies such as gene, protein, or metabolite expression and histopathology</p> </li></ol> <ul> <li>Mass spectrometry-based metabolomics </li><li>Record detailed observations about experiments </li><li>Maintain and develop standard laboratory protocols </li><li>Coordination with clinical research staff to obtain and process human samples for experiments </li><li>Coordination with core facilities to carry out experiments requiring specialized expertise or equipment </li><li>Contribute to manuscript and grant preparation and progress reports </li></ul> <p>25%: General Lab Management, Maintenance, and Inventory Management</p> <ul> <li>Maintain laboratory records, inventories, and logbooks </li><li>Providing and enforcing standard operating procedures </li><li>Monitor and maintain machines </li><li>Ensure samples are received and stored properly </li><li>Ensure all waste is removed according to regulations </li><li>Ensure compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures </li><li>Training of other scientists, technicians, students, and support personnel </li><li>Responsible for lab supply ordering, and lab organization and cleaning </li><li>Other duties as assigned </li></ul> <p>Qualifications</p> <p>All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.</p> <p>Required Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Must meet one of the following educational/experience profiles: </li></ul> <ol> <li> <p>Masters in a STEM-related field plus at least 4 years post-graduate work experience</p> </li><li> <p>PhD degree must be in a biological science, chemistry, or bioengineering plus at least 1 year of relevant work experience</p> </li></ol> <ul> <li>Experience with molecular biology techniques (cloning, PCR, immunoblotting), flow cytometry, microscopy, or cell culture </li><li>Strong organizational skills </li><li>Strong written and verbal communication </li><li>Independent problem-solving skills </li><li>Willingness to work with animal models </li><li>Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace </li><li>Ability to learn new software </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Prior experience as a laboratory manager </li><li>Prior experience with human subject research </li><li>Knowledgeable in the fields of metabolism and/or cancer biology </li><li>Experience in an academic setting </li><li>Experience with manuscript or grant preparation </li><li>Ability to work with a high level of independence </li></ul> <p>Pay and Benefits</p> <p>Pay Range: $81,000 - $101,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience</p> <p>Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)</p> <p>Position Type: Faculty and P&A Staff</p> <p>Please visit the Office of Human Resources website for more information regarding benefit eligibility.</p> <p>The University offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes:</p> <ul> <li>Competitive wages, paid holidays, and generous time off </li><li>Continuous learning opportunities through professional training and degree-seeking programs supported by the Regents Tuition Benefit Program </li><li>Low-cost medical, dental, and pharmacy plans </li><li>Healthcare and dependent care flexible spending accounts </li><li>University HSA contributions </li><li>Disability and employer-paid life insurance </li><li>Employee wellbeing program </li><li>Excellent retirement plans with employer contribution </li><li>Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) opportunity </li><li>Financial counseling services </li><li>Employee Assistance Program with eight sessions of counseling at no cost </li><li>Employee Transit Pass with free or reduced rates in the Twin Cities metro area </li></ul> <p>How To Apply</p> <p>Applications must be submitted online.
