<p>Class Definition</p> <p>GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To perform a variety of administrative tasks and low to moderate complexity laboratory analyses in direct support of clinical, environmental, or forensic laboratory examinations; to provide support to quality improvement initiatives and the generation of data for new methodologies; and to do related work as required.</p> <p>SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives instructions and specific assignments from a supervisor; work is subject to review upon completion for accuracy and compliance to prescribed procedures.</p> <p>SUPERVISION EXERCISED: As required, may oversee or instruct the work of subordinates assigned to assist.</p> <p>Illustrative Examples of Work Performed</p> <p>To perform a variety of administrative tasks and low to moderate complexity laboratory analyses in direct support of clinical, environmental, forensic, and building operations.</p> <p>To provide support to quality improvement initiatives and the generation of data for new methodologies.</p> <p>To perform data entry and case management.</p> <p>To receive, process, accession, distribute, weigh, and ensure chain of custody of specimens, samples, and evidence submitted to the laboratory for analysis.</p> <p>To perform a variety of logging, tracking, and data entry functions related to the testing of specimens, samples, and evidence.</p> <p>To receive and distribute clinical, forensic, and environmental samples to the proper laboratory or analytical area.</p> <p>To decontaminate, clean and sterilize a variety of glassware, benchtops, instruments, and equipment in accordance with established procedures.</p> <p>To prepare specimen kits and containers for distribution to health care providers, the public and inspectors.</p> <p>To sort and prepare laboratory reports for mailing. To transport and store medical waste according to established protocol.</p> <p>To compile data and reports as required.</p> <p>To perform and document routine quality assurance checks, such as the recording of specimen or sample storage conditions, preventive maintenance, or peer reviews. May assist in training laboratory employees in data entry policies and procedures and analytical methodologies.</p> <p>To utilize safety procedures and biosafety procedures according to the established standards.</p> <p>To create and maintain accurate laboratory records and contact information for submitting clients, and to address and resolve issues with mislabeled specimens, and to track and follow-up on problem submission.</p> <p>To assist in collection and identification of specimens for special laboratory studies including those related to quality assurance.</p> <p>To assist the laboratory in complying with institutional and governmental regulations and requirements for accreditation.</p> <p>To inventory, track, and order supplies on behalf of individual laboratories or building-wide operations.</p> <p>To assist laboratories in the execution of QA requirements including, but not limited to, daily temperature checks, inventory rotation, disposal of expired reagents and media, filing of laboratory requisitions, document control, and any other relevant duty. As required, to calibrate, install, or facilitate the repair and maintenance of laboratory equipment.</p> <p>To maintain all necessary records and reports for distribution.</p> <p>To be responsible for the care, custody and maintenance of evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies; to appear in court and provide testimony as required.</p> <p>To be responsible for receiving, storing, securing, and inventorying drugs and other biological evidence.</p> <p>To be responsible for dispensing evidence for examination and analysis and to ensure that such evidence is returned in its entire state in accordance with accepted standards, practices, and policies.</p> <p>To be responsible for returning evidence to submitting agencies upon request.</p> <p>To prepare stock solutions, reagents, collection vessels, and specimen collection kits in support of individual laboratory and building-wide activities.</p> <p>To perform routine biological, chemical, and toxicological analyses on specimens, samples, and evidence.</p> <p>To perform quality improvement procedures and identify compliance with standards.</p> <p>To attend technical and programmatic meetings and seminars as required.</p> <p>To assist in the generation of data in support of new methodology validation.</p> <p>To perform proficiency tests as a method of quality assurance.</p> <p>To do related work as required</p> <p>Required Qualifications for Appointment</p> <p>KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques used in preparing stains, media and solutions; a working knowledge of methods and techniques applied in performing a variety of routine and complex standardized biological and chemical tests and analyses; a working knowledge of the operation, care and maintenance of basic and more sophisticated laboratory equipment; the ability to apply these methods and techniques in performing routine and more complex analyses and tests; a thorough knowledge of the methods used in preparing stains, media and solutions; the ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions accurately; and related capacities and abilities.</p> <p>EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education: Graduation from a college of recognized standing with a Bachelor's degree in a biological, chemical, or physical science or closely related field; or Experience: Considerable employment in a technical capacity in a laboratory performing a variety of routine and more complex tests and analyses. Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.</p> <p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: As it pertains to assignment within a clinical laboratory, the individual must meet the requirements for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technician as required by Rhode Island Law and regulations. The employee will be required to have the appropriate and necessary vaccinations.</p> <p>Supplemental Information</p> <p>The Assistant Scientist will be located in the Forensic Biology lab and will be responsible for collecting buccal swabs and processing DNA database samples from convicted felons. Travel to satellite probation offices, prisons and courthouses throughout the state will be required, therefore the candidate will need reliable transportation. The preferred applicant will have a thorough knowledge of the Rhode Island criminal justice system; the ability to maintain a secure chain-of-custody to evidence; the ability to appear in court and provide testimony as required; the ability to effectively interact with criminal justice agencies; and related capacities and abilities.</p> <p>For information regarding the benefits available to State of Rhode Island employees, please visit the Office of Employee Benefits' website at http://www.employeebenefits.ri.gov/.</p> <p>Also, be advised that a new provision in RI General Law 35-6-1 was enacted requiring direct deposit for all employees.
