<p>John Ball Zoo</p> <p>PAID- Animal Health and Nutrition Veterinary Intern</p> <p>Animal Health and Nutrition Veterinary Internship</p> <p>SUMMARY</p> <p>Reporting to the Director of Animal Health and Wellbeing, the Animal Health and Nutrition Intern will be exposed to all facets of the animal health team's work at the zoo and will have the following responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Assist the zoo's nutrition team with preparation of daily diets, distribution of food enrichment and overall operation of the zoo's nutrition operation. </li><li>Assist the hospital zookeeper with daily husbandry for hospitalized and quarantined animals housed at the Animal Hospital, including daily feeding, diet delivery, cleaning and disinfecting. </li><li>Participate in daily veterinary rounds and review scientific literature pertinent to active cases </li><li>Observe and assist the veterinarians and veterinary technicians with both emergent and routine veterinary procedures </li><li>Assist the hospital team with the overall upkeep of the zoo's hospital by assisting with daily cleaning, stocking and other daily tasks. </li></ul> <p>This is a paid position with 40 hours working 4-5 days a week, potentially including 1 weekend day. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and may close once a strong pool of candidates is reached-apply early!</p> <p>Starting Pay: $16</p> <p>Start Date: May 18th</p> <p>End Date: August 7th</p> <p>QUALIFICATIONS</p> <ul> <li>Must be enrolled in an accredited veterinary program </li><li>Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to interact positively and appropriately with coworkers, supervisors, managers and members of the public with a wide variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. </li></ul> <p>REQUIRED SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND/OR SKILLS</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of biology, zoology, animal husbandry and veterinary medical care. </li><li>At minimum, an introductory working knowledge of programs such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Google Forms, and Google Sheets. </li></ul> <p>EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's Degree in a pertinent field of study and/or completion of all necessary prerequisite undergraduate courses for successful admission to a veterinary program. </li><li>Completion of at least the first year of veterinary study is preferred, but consideration will be given to applicants who have graduated from their undergraduate institution and are enrolled to begin veterinary school in the Fall. </li></ul> <p>EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES</p> <ul> <li>Development of a foundational understanding of the husbandry and nutritional needs of wildlife in human care. </li><li>Exposure to the full breadth of managing comprehensive animal health, welfare and nutrition programs. </li><li>Development of a greater understanding of Animal Welfare/Well-being and the multi-disciplinary approach to providing excellent welfare for animals housed in a zoo setting. </li><li>Exposure to the process of diet planning, analysis, and management </li><li>Introduction to the wide array of species treated and managed by zoo and aquarium veterinarians and the unique approaches needed to examine, diagnose and treat these patients. </li></ul> <p>EDUCATIONAL EXPECTATIONS</p> <ul> <li>Presentation of a final project at the conclusion of the internship. </li><li>Expected to attend learning and social events hosted by the zoo. </li></ul> <p>WORK ENVIRONMENT</p> <ul> <li>Intern will work in various environments both inside and outside and may occasionally be exposed to inclement weather, pollen, mold, dust, dirt and other airborne contaminants </li><li>Must be able to work seated at a desk for data management projects for extended periods of time. </li><li>Must be able to work in close proximity to exotic and domestic animals. </li><li>Must be able to tolerate exposure to animal dander, animal wastes and other zoonotic contaminants. </li><li>Must be able to tolerate exposure to anti-bacterial, disinfectants and other cleaning compounds. </li><li>Must be able to wear all required protective clothing and equipment. </li><li>Must be able to lift 50 lbs. </li></ul> <p>John Ball Zoo is a drug-free workplace under federal regulations.?Reasonable accommodation will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.</p> <p>How to Apply</p> <p>Please apply on our website directly using this link</p> <p>https://hcm.paycor.com/l/r/2DC4638B</p> <p>John Ball Zoo</p> <p>1300 Fulton West Street</p> <p>Grand Rapids, MI 49504</p> <p>Phone: 616-336-5062</p> <p>Visit our website</p>
