<p>Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) is seeking an extraordinary Dean of Students to work in our school. Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) is an innovative public high school that engages young adults to build a vision for their futures through supportive relationships and meaningful competency-based learning. BDEA students are 16 to 23 years old, having attended traditional schools where they may have felt lost, unsafe, or disengaged. At BDEA, students are listened to and respected for who they are and the gifts they possess. Working with experienced faculty in an environment that blends strong academics and support, students are given the opportunity to earn a Boston Public Schools diploma and to reach their fullest potential through a competency-based curriculum that inspires critical and creative thinking, independent learning, and active citizenship. Our extended program, which runs from 8am to 4:30pm and does not have grade levels, serves students who are promoted from middle school without being academically prepared for high school, have dropped out of high school and decided to return to earn a diploma, or are unable to attend regular school hours due to health issues, full time work and/or full time parenting obligations. The school employs 60 full and part-time staff to work with 410 students and is governed by an active Board of Trustees. All employees are expected to uphold BDEA's mission to build a consistent, unified, anti-racist, inclusive community that stimulates greater student agency, engagement, and academic achievement.</p> <p>We are looking for a professional who is committed to working with our students, who understands the lives of urban youth and who has a track record of working successfully with students who face academic and personal challenges. The Dean of Students supports the Director of Student Support to implement restorative practices that create a school culture of respect. They are committed to creating a safe, inclusive community that promotes emotional, social and academic growth.</p> <p>Title: Dean of Students [BASAS 3A]</p> <p>Reports to: School Leader</p> <p>Responsibilities</p> <p>School Climate</p> <ul> <li>Work with staff and students to uphold using restorative practices BDEA Community Agreements that promote student emotional, social and academic growth (before, during and after school programming). </li><li>Coordinate and lead student disciplinary meetings and peer mediation and other restorative justice/alternative discipline responses to student disciplinary concerns. </li><li>Communicate effectively with parents, caregivers and families of students to support positive student behaviors. </li><li>Ensure with the support of School Social Workers and CFC's the creation of student agreements (behavioral), attendance plans and apply social service interventions by referring to external agencies when appropriate. </li><li>Manage a student caseload, participate in biweekly meetings with advisors to discuss social emotional interventions that students may need to attend school. Ensure consistent, accurate data entry into BDEA systems (Connects) including responding to logs. </li><li>Serve as a liaison to BPS OPERATIONAL LEADERS, School safety personnel and any other agency involved in safety and school discipline matters </li></ul> <p>Professional Development</p> <ul> <li>Co-create with the Director of Student Support weekly professional development and staff support meetings that address the specific needs, goals and professional growth of the student support team. </li><li>Co-Create agenda with School Climate Coordinator and 2.0 SST Department head, for rotating bi monthly CFC meetings </li><li>Make home visits to students and families as needed, in support of student attendance, and to ensure 100% participation in state assessments. </li><li>Support the success of Symposium, Portfolio Reviews, all school professional development, retreats, activities and other community and all-school events. </li><li>Engage in best practices and professional standards of care. </li><li>Model professional behaviors that contribute to addressing the needs of students, families, and the school community. </li><li>Perform other related duties as requested by the Administrative Team to assure smooth school functioning </li></ul> <p>Required Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment </li><li>Minimum Bachelors or equivalent work experience. </li><li>Minimum of three years professional experience working with at-risk youth </li><li>Bilingual in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Cape Verdean Creole a strong plus </li><li>Strong interpersonal skills to work with school, students, parents and community based agencies </li><li>Experience successfully working with non-traditional students in an urban, alternative setting </li><li>The ability to connect to and work with students using a variety of methods while always maintaining a respectful and caring manner </li><li>Ability to motivate and inspire a diverse set of stakeholders toward a common goal. </li><li>Experience mediating disputes and designing intervention plans </li><li>The ability to establish a multicultural and multigenerational atmosphere at BDEA, including a strong commitment to working with the families of our students and with our parenting students. </li><li>Adhere to BDEA's Non-Discrimination Policy (see below) </li></ul> <p>Terms: BASAS 3A</p> <p>As a Horace Mann Charter School, teachers and staff are paid a competitive salary in accordance with the Boston Public Schools. School-based managerial employees will work 223 days between July 1st and June 30th each year. The 223 day work-year will include the 188 days in which school is in session, and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school. While the school generally follows the BPS calendar, it requires additional planning time before, after or during the year, as agreed upon in the ETWA. The Dean of Students hours will be 8:00-4:00 pm Monday-Friday. However, hours may vary according to student needs.
