Wallace, a 35-foot downeast design trawling vessel. The vessel is used for running the Peconic Bay Trawl Survey and is constructed with a single-screw inboard, equipped with 2 hydraulic winches, and an A-frame. The captain is responsible for survey operations throughout the Peconic Estuary system from Flanders Bay in the west, to the western side of Shelter Island, towing a small-mesh net for the purpose of surveying juvenile fish and invertebrates yearly from May through October. Responsibilities include prepping the boat for the season and every trip, checking and maintaining fluids, visual inspection of the engine and equipment for proper operation, and general vessel readiness. Additional vessel maintenance is required such as greasing the winches and repairing the trawling gear as needed. This includes engine troubleshooting and minor repair or contacting outside vendors for major repairs or work as needed. This position is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of all staff onboard during survey operations. At the conclusion of the sampling season, this position is required to coordinate vessel winterization and purchasing of supplies.
