<p>Deputy Chief Investigator</p> <p>Employment Type: 0 - Full-time Regular</p> <p>Pay Range: $98,800.00 - 148,200.00</p> <p>Location: Castle Rock, CO</p> <p>Overtime Exempt: Y</p> <p>Elected Office / Department: DISTRICT ATTORNEY</p> <p>This position performs a variety of criminal investigation activities from basic to complex - and supervises criminal investigators in their performance of the same - in support of the statutory requirements of the Office of the District Attorney. View the full Employee Benefits Guide</p> <p>View the full job description here</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)</p> <ul> <li>Performs supervisory responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Investigator, including but not limited to acting as proxy in absence of Chief Investigator, equitable assignment and monitoring of Investigator cases/work, offering constructive input to investigators and Chief Investigator to enhance and measure performance, etc. (see Chief Investigator job description). </li><li>Is able to perform all of the functions of a Criminal Investigator (see Criminal Investigator job description). Conducts pre and post case filing investigations of semi-complicated conventional crime activities, as well as complicated and often sensitive investigations; analyzes initial data to determine probable criminal law violations, case validity, and course of investigation; prepares preliminary witness/suspect lists, gathers evidence and documents through reports and supporting evidentiary lists those findings of fact to be included in the case file. Performs surveillance activities as necessary, researches a wide variety of records and related documents; compiles, indexes, records and analyzes relevant data to develop case file as necessary for court filing; employs various evidence gathering techniques, including but not limited to: witness interviews, suspect interrogation, wiretaps, crime scene searches, polygraph analysis and crime lab analysis. Meets periodically with attorney(s) to discuss case preparation and advise in areas (such as plea bargaining) on cases that are highly visible and sensitive. </li><li>Coordinates investigations with other jurisdictional police agencies as necessary; may act as case coordinator to cooperating agencies' investigatory personnel; provides advice, expertise, or other assistance to these agencies within the 23rd Judicial District. Prepares a variety of moderately complex to complex reports and warrant affidavits as required by law and established precedent; appears in court as required to testify as prosecution or defense witness; serves as a special investigator for Grand Jury proceedings. Ability to readily and independently prepare search warrant - and court order - affidavits, and to plan and execute search warrants, arrest warrants, orders for non-testimonial evidence seizure, and court ordered production of records. </li><li>Performs all of the following, including but not limited to any associated duties: office and witness security, meetings with attorneys, public relations, handling citizens' complaints/inquiries, process serving, and transportation of case principals to court, may perform specialized functions in support of fellow workers' professional standards requirements, e.g., weapons training and arrest procedures. </li><li>Attends various professional meetings and seminars to exchange information and/or to discuss current or innovative techniques related to the field of criminal investigation; provides technical assistance/training to agencies within the 23rd Judicial District. </li><li>In addition to investigative responsibilities, the Deputy Chief Investigator may handle administrative tasks such as budgeting, personnel management, and policy development. This position also includes ensuring that staff are properly trained and equipped. </li><li>Performs other duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or a closely related field, with a preference for candidates holding advanced degrees in a related field. </li><li>Candidates should have extensive experience in criminal investigations, requiring at least five (5) years of experience at the Criminal Investigator level or related equivalent experience. </li><li>Supervisory experience preferred. </li><li>A combination of experience and education may be considered. </li></ul> <p>CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Colorado P.O.S.T. certification (including completion of the required physical and psychological testing, and all other P.O.S.T. requirements). </li><li>Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment. </li><li>This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check including fingerprinting through a national database. </li></ul> <p>ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:</p> <p>Closing Date: 4/10/2026 4:59PM MST. This may mean being available to perform additional duties and hours beyond what is normally required. In the event that an exempt employee does work more than 40 hours a week in support of County operations during an emergency, such employee may receive overtime or other appropriate wage compensation in accordance with existing County policies or at the discretion of the County.</p>
