<p>Position Type:</p> <p>District Wide/Alternative Education Special Education Teacher 7-12</p> <p>Date Posted:</p> <p>7/21/2025</p> <p>Location:</p> <p>New London Adult and Continuing Education</p> <p>  Additional Information: Show/Hide</p> <p>REPORTS TO: Director of Adult Education</p> <p>PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: Annually by the Director of Adult Education.</p> <p>TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10-month position; other terms as determined by the Board of Education per the New London Education Association (NLEA) collective bargaining agreement.</p> <p>PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Alternative Education Teacher is responsible for providing instruction in a nontraditional educational setting tailored to meet the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students. The role involves supporting students who meet clearly defined criteria for alternative education through personalized instruction, structured placement and exit procedures, and close collaboration with families and student support teams, including IEP/504 or Student Success Plan (SSP) teams where appropriate.</p> <p>TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This description of Alternative Education Teacher is for identification and administrative purposes only. It is not intended to be a complete statement of all duties, which may be assigned or adjusted by the Superintendent of Schools according to varying needs.</p> <ul> <li>Design and deliver standards-based instruction aligned with Connecticut Core Standards and differentiated to address individual learning plans, including IEPs and Student Success Plans. </li><li>Facilitate a personalized and supportive learning environment using small group instruction (max 12:1 ratio), blended learning models, student choice, and integrated wraparound supports. </li><li>Collaborate with families, district support staff, community partners, and external agencies to provide a holistic educational experience that promotes academic and behavioral growth. </li><li>Monitor and report student progress using data-driven methods aligned with CT reporting standards (e.g., PSIS, ED163, Strategic School Profiles). </li><li>Provide targeted academic support to students engaged in credit recovery, ensuring alignment with curriculum standards and timely progress toward graduation. </li><li>Participate in professional development related to trauma-informed instruction, restorative practices, and culturally responsive pedagogy. </li><li>Support the program's compliance with all CSDE alternative education guidelines and statutes (e.g., Public Act 15-133, Conn. Gen. Stat. § 10-74j). </li><li>Participate in professional development on trauma-informed instruction, restorative practices, and culturally responsive pedagogy. </li><li>Maintain accurate records of student progress, behavior, and family communications. </li><li>Attend school meetings, contribute to school-wide initiatives, and fulfill other assigned duties. </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Connecticut Secondary Teacher Certification (Grades 4-12). </li><li>Bachelor's degree in Education (Master's preferred). </li><li>Minimum 2 years' experience, ideally in alternative, special education, behavioral intervention, or trauma-informed settings. </li><li>Strong classroom management, culturally responsive and trauma-informed instructional skills. </li><li>Ability to create and report using Student Success Plans, IEPs, ILPs, and behavioral benchmarks CT.gov. </li><li>Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred. </li></ul> <p>SALARY: As determined by experience and NLEA contract.</p> <p>New London Public School District is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.</p> <p>Candidates from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply</p>
