The Greenhouse Assistant will develop competency in and complete all tasks established by the Horticulture Technician to effectively and efficiently grow and maintain quality trees, shrubs, perennials, mums, cabbage, kale, and asters for the Long Island Region of the New York State Parks System.</p> <p>Duties include, but are not limited to:</p> <ul> <li>Plant, irrigate, fertilize, weed, prune, clean, transplant, maintain plants, soil and pots. </li><li>Notify the Horticulture Technician of irrigation system issues for nursery and greenhouse; repair irrigation equipment as needed. </li><li>Assist the Horticulture Technician with administrative tasks such as ordering supplies and keeping track of inventory, working on crop records, etc. </li><li>Learn new methods of nursery, greenhouse management, gardening and sharing existing knowledge of nursery, greenhouse management and gardening. </li><li>Plant and maintain garden areas, such as the administration building, flagpole planting and landscape around the building. </li><li>Identify plants as well as problems such as diseases, weeds and insect pests and take action as needed. </li><li>Take stewardship of the park land, plants and various environments and coordinate with staff as well as volunteer groups to support the sustainability of the site. </li><li>Support production planning and scheduling for all areas of the nursery, greenhouse and gardens. </li><li>Develop and discuss alternative strategies for planting and maintenance; which applies to the management of the forest surrounding the nursery and greenhouse and other potential gardens at the park. </li><li>Performing other related duties as assigned </li></ul> <p>Minimum Qualifications • No minimum qualification per Civil Service.</p> <p>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS</p> <ul> <li>Horticultural experience/ or academic training in horticulture or a related field is strongly preferred. </li></ul> <p>Additional Comments • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.</p> <ul> <li>Weekdays, weekends and holiday availability required </li><li>Ability to work in environmental conditions of cold, hot, wet and humid </li><li>Must possess strong organizational and critical thinking skills and the ability to work independently or on a team. </li><li>Must be able to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time outside and lift up to 50 lbs, also function in physical positions such as stooping, bending, turning, twisting, walking, reaching and squatting. </li></ul> <p>Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity.</p> <p>Name Michelle Doran Leute</p> <p>Telephone (631) 792-2465</p> <p>Fax</p> <p>Email Address Michelle.Doran-Leute@parks.ny.gov</p> <p>Address</p> <p>Street Belmont Lake State Park</p> <p>625 Belmont Ave</p> <p>City West Babylon,</p> <p>State NY</p> <p>Zip Code 11704</p> <p>Notes on ApplyingIf you feel you meet the minimum qualifications and the agency's operating needs and are interested in being considered for this vacancy, you can obtain an Employment Application from your local park office your region's administrative headquarters, or you can download an application from the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation by visiting the website https://parks.ny.gov/regions/long-island/default.aspx.</p> <p>Please forward your application and resume, if available to Michelle Doran Leute at: Michelle.Doran-Leute@parks.ny.gov by To Be Determined.
