<p>Work involves responsibility for: planning; assigning work; assigning tasks; and leading the work of a moderate sized crew engaged in a wide variety of vehicle maintenance and repair activities. Employee in this class instruct workers in work methods and procedures and inspect work in progress and upon completion. Work is performed with considerable independence and is reviewed through discussion, by observation of results achieved and by administrative or technical superior.</p> <p>In addition to the crew leader responsibilities, an employee in this position may be called upon to perform manual labor and operate hand tools, motorized hand operated equipment and motor vehicles. This may include operating a variety of vehicles. and equipment such as single, tandem axle and four wheel drive trucks, tractor mowers, small to medium sized end loaders, asphalt rollers, tractor backhoes, chain saws and various other types of maintenance and construction equipment.</p> <p>60% Coordinates the activities of repair shop personal: mechanics, welders, machinist.</p> <ul> <li>Responsible for: planning; laying out work; assigning tasks and leading the work of a moderately sized repair facility. </li><li>Plan and stage work for Repair Shop, Weld Shop and Machine Shop daily. </li><li>Instruct workers in safe, repair methods and procedures. </li><li>Inspect work in progress and upon completion. </li><li>Review results achieved with Shop Superintendent. </li></ul> <p>15% Troubleshoot, diagnose, and over see repair of a wide verity of equipment.</p> <ul> <li>Maintains and repairs equipment from hand held tools, riding lawn mowers, </li></ul> <p>automobiles, pick-ups, single, tandem, tri and quad axle dump trucks. Also heavy equipment such as agricultural machinery, graders, rollers, asphalt paver, shoulder machine end loaders of all sizes etc.</p> <ul> <li>Fabrication of tools, parts, etc. </li><li>Work within the Faster Fleet Management System, creating work orders, install equipment, run reports etc. </li></ul> <p>5% Performs routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles.</p> <ul> <li>Inspects equipment prior to use for safety and maintenance issues. </li><li>Performs maintenance and repairs on equipment. </li><li>Keeps equipment clean and in good working order. </li></ul> <p>5% Keep current on safety related issues.</p> <ul> <li>Become familiar with latest procedures. </li><li>Attend all required safety related trainings. </li><li>Report all accidents in a timely manner. </li></ul> <p>5% Keep current with all administrative procedures.</p> <ul> <li>Completely fill out and hand in time sheets on time. </li><li>Fill out log book if one has been issued to you. </li></ul> <p>10% Perform other duties as assigned.</p> <ul> <li>Considerable knowledge in general construction and/or maintenance equipment commonly used on public works construction and maintenance activities. </li><li>Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods, techniques and equipment commonly used on public works construction and maintenance activities. </li><li>Considerable knowledge of the hazards and fire safety precautions in public works construction and maintenance activities. </li><li>Knowledge and experience with pneumatic controls and actuators </li><li>Knowledge and experience with Air Conditioning testing, repair and refilling. </li><li>Considerable knowledge of computer controlled braking systems, auto, truck and heavy truck </li><li>Good written and verbal communication skills. </li><li>Ability to trouble shoot problems using blueprints, schematics, with an understanding of control devices and actuators. </li><li>Ability to use meters, scanners, and a variety of diagnostic software </li><li>Ability to plan, assign and lead the work of others. </li><li>Ability to read and follow plan documents. </li><li>Ability to use computer for e-mail and research. </li><li>Ability to take elevation measurements (optical and laser). </li><li>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, supervisors, public and private officials and the general public. </li><li>Ability to accomplish tasks while at the same time maintaining effective public service with a minimum of interruption to public convenience. </li><li>Ability to perform duties in a safe manner. </li><li>Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school or equivalent experience sufficient to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required of the position. </li><li>Must possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (Class A) when hired and a working telephone. Must Possess and maintain a current unrestricted (not due to corrective lenses) driver's license and auto insurance pursuant to the Rock County Administrative Policy and Procedure Policy 5.02 and 5.27 </li><li>Positions in the job class this position is assigned to are subject to random drug and alcohol testing pursuant to Department of Transportation rules and regulations. Testing negative on required tests is a condition of employment. </li></ul> <p>Physical Elements:</p> <p>Lift, push, pull: Must be able to:</p> <ul> <li>lift and carry up to 80 lbs. (4 x 6 sign post with a partner or bags of material) </li><li>shovel gravel from truck box to wheel barrow </li><li>lift snow fence rolls, push and roll it up to 50 feet and install 7' metal posts using a post pounder </li><li>shovel/push snow by hand </li><li>lift to 8 foot high signs and hold in place </li><li>shovel asphalt (30lb/shovel full) </li></ul> <p>Bending, squatting, kneeling: Must be able to:</p> <ul> <li>bend, squat, kneel in order to perform maintenance activities </li></ul> <p>Climbing, overhead work: Must be able to:</p> <ul> <li>climb ladder and get into truck dump box to clean it out </li><li>enter and exit truck cab by stepping onto a step 24 inches from the ground </li><li>work for a sustained period of time on ladders to cut tree branches, repair signs and perform truck maintenance </li></ul> <p>Equipment Use:</p> <ul> <li>a variety of vehicles and equipment such as single, multiple axle and four wheel drive trucks, tractor mowers, small to medium sized end loaders, asphalt rollers, tractor backhoes, etc. </li><li>lift and operate portable power tools such as chain saws, cut off saws, jack hammers(60 lb), rotary hammer drills, and various other types of maintenance and construction equipment. </li></ul> <p>Working conditions:</p> <ul> <li>Duties are performed mainly outside involving exposure to all weather conditions. Since employees in this position operate construction and maintenance equipment at roadway construction sites, they are exposed to construction hazards such as: traffic, dust and dirt, and noise. During the use of equipment the employees are subject to potentially hazardous substances such as: diesel fuel, gasoline, lubricants, and solvents. Employees may be required to report for work at any time to work in emergency conditions such as storms, flooding, at accident scenes, and for emergency repairs to roads, bridges, and signs. </li></ul>
