2026 Housing Action Corps

Housing Action Illinois (Housing Action) is a statewide coalition of 180+ organizations dedicated to expanding quality, affordable housing throughout Illinois. We believe housing is a human right and recognize that accessing housing is a matter of racial and economic justice. We want all communities to thrive, and our coalition will work until we create a state where everyone has a safe, stable place to call home. The need for our coalition has never been so clear. We are facing a housing crisis; levels of homelessness are rising in nearly all of our communities. Local organizations are trying to meet these growing needs, but their dedicated teams are understaffed and overworked. At the same time, it can be difficult for new voices to break into the housing field without relevant leadership experience. We launched the Housing Action Corps to address these challenges and cultivate future leaders in housing justice. Since 2010, Housing Action has connected community-based organizations with AmeriCorps members to pilot ideas and expand programs. Every community has different needs and opportunities, and every organization uses a different approach to achieve their mission. AmeriCorps members take on a variety of roles and projects at their host sites, all aimed at building the capacity of their organizations and strengthening communities. In the last few years, we launched two specific initiatives, Housing Counseling Corps and Green Homes Corps, that each focus on providing specific housing related services to their communities. Whether you plan to apply for jobs or seek further education, serving with the Housing Action Corps helps you to take the next step. Nearly 94% of alumni in our network secured employment or education within 6 months of finishing their term of service (the national AmeriCorps average is 67%).
