<p>General Definition of Work</p> <p>The school crossing guard, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion related to the safe movement of students crossing public roadways when walking or bicycling to and from school. Employee performs school-based work to carry-out Board of Education policies under the direction of the assigned school's principal.</p> <p>The scheduled work time varies and it is determined by the location of the assignment. The position works approximately ten (10) hours per week, one (1) hour in the morning and one (1) hour in the afternoon. School Crossing Guards without an assigned location may be asked to substitute at different locations. The position is required to wear a uniform and to work outdoors regardless of weather conditions.</p> <p>Qualifications</p> <p>To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.</p> <p>Salary/Status</p> <p>Flat Rate/ Part-time, 9 months</p> <p>Reports To</p> <p>Principal</p> <p>Place of Work</p> <p>The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.</p> <p>Essential Functions</p> <ul> <li>Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures </li><li>Direct the safe and orderly movement of elementary or middle school students and pedestrians crossing public roadways and intersections </li><li>Attend to designated street crossings by maintaining position in a highly visible and safe location, standing on the side of the street where students approach </li><li>Monitor traffic flow to recognize traffic openings, then safely step into and stop traffic </li><li>Place and remove caution signs and cones </li><li>Caution drivers of speeding vehicles using whistles, signs, handheld traffic wands, flashlights, and hand signals </li><li>Notify CMS Safety & Risk Management of hazardous roadway conditions and physical hazards </li><li>Clear crosswalks of rocks, glass, cans and other items to prevent injuries to children </li><li>Maintain assigned equipment (e.g. stop sign, traffic vest, etc.) </li><li>Keep accurate count of children crossing the street during their shift </li><li>Perform related work as assigned or required </li></ul> <p>Knowledge, Skills, Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of North Carolina traffic regulations </li><li>Knowledge of basic safety crossing techniques and basic safety principles and practices. </li><li>Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations; manage and warn students in sufficient time to avoid injury </li><li>Ability to be observant at all times and ensure the safety of students </li><li>Ability to react quickly in emergency situations </li><li>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, parents, school officials and law enforcement </li><li>Strong verbal communication skills </li><li>Ability to remain observant, alert, and diligent </li><li>Ability to work in all weather conditions and possibly hazardous traffic conditions </li><li>Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time </li><li>Ability to be present and punctual when reporting for duty </li><li>Ability to work approximately two (2) hours per day, one (1) hour in the morning and one (1) </li><li>hour in the afternoon </li><li>Ability to work schedule that will occasionally vary to accommodate early dismissals, severe weather conditions, and similar events </li><li>Ability to solve problems and de-escalate situations in a non-confrontational manner </li></ul> <p>Education and Experience</p> <ul> <li>High School Diploma or equivalent required </li><li>Must be eighteen (18) years or older </li><li>Must complete a (3) hour School Guard Safety Training annually </li><li>Equivalent combination of education and experience </li></ul>
