<p>Job is comprised of clinical component and program development:</p> <p>Clinical component: Counsel patients and families about genetic diseases, genetic testing procedures and test results; Evaluate patients and other family members in conjunction with medical director and other clinicians. Provide access to resources for medical interventions, grief counseling, and supportive follow-up as needed. Provide information to other pediatric subspecialties seeking genetic testing.</p> <p>Program development: Work with the hospital/hospital laboratory to develop genetic testing program.</p> <ul> <li>Reviews patient records in anticipation of initial visit, investigate testing options, follow up testing result, provide result and genetic counseling, and follow up family testing based on patient results. </li><li>Helps to develop genomic testing program. This program is designed to be a single resource for the hospital and outpatient providers who are seeking genetic or genomic testing for their patients. </li><li>Assists with genetic counseling for metabolic and newborn screening program. </li><li>Acts as a resource for other subspecialties seeking genetic or genomic testing in order to identify the most appropriate testing. </li><li>Serve as educator and resource for staff, house staff, and other health care professionals. </li><li>Reviews laboratory sendouts to identify most appropriate genomic testing based on analysis of risk, benefit and cost. </li></ul> <p>Provide teaching to medical students, housestaff, others.</p> <ul> <li>Demonstrates support for the mission, vision, values, and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with CT Children's standards. </li><li>Basic Understanding of CT Children's Policies and Procedures. </li></ul> <p>Understanding of the organization's environment of care.</p> <p>Education and/or Experience Required:</p> <ul> <li>Master of Science in Genetic Counseling required. </li><li>Prior experience working as clinical or laboratory-based genetic counselor preferred, but new graduates will be considered. </li></ul> <p>License and/or Certification Required:</p> <ul> <li>Board certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics is required; if not Board certified, as a condition of employment must achieve certification within one year of employment. </li><li>Connecticut Genetic Counselor license is required within one year of employment. If not licensed, a Connecticut temporary Genetic Counselor permit is required. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:</p> <p>Knowledge Of:</p> <ul> <li>Technical and ethical aspects of genomic testing and ease with discussing these issues with patients and professionals. </li></ul> <p>Comfort with billing and insurance systems. Knowledge about genetic aspects of newborn screening disorders.</p> <p>Skills:</p> <ul> <li>Advanced skills with Microsoft applications that may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases. </li></ul> <p>Ability To:</p> <ul> <li>Learn Epic, our electronic medical record, for documentation of patient visit and testing results. </li></ul>
