<p>WASTEWATER TECHNICIAN II 618l0</p> <p>(Competitive)</p> <p>DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS</p> <p>The work involves responsibility for collecting, sampling, measuring and analyzing water and wastewater. Data collected is recorded, compiled and analyzed to determine compliance with New York State and Federal regulations; industrial user compliance with both county and federal pretreatment standards; calculation of industrial, commercial and domestic surcharges and user charges; and, compliance with ambient water quality standards. This class differs from that of the entry level Wastewater Technician by virtue of the supervisory duties and scheduling responsibility over the entry level class. In addition, the work involves the preliminary interpretation of the data collected and technical report preparation. Employees in this class are required to be available on call-in basis for response to unusual conditions occurring within the collection system and to dispatch work teams as required. General supervision is received from a Sanitary Engineer. Supervision is exercised over entry level wastewater technical staff. Assignments made to employees in this class will require reasonable access to transportation to meet field work requirements made in the ordinary course of business in a timely and efficient manner. Does related work as required.</p> <p>TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES</p> <p>Collects lake, river and stream samples and obtains the necessary in-situ measurements by operating field equipment to gather dissolved oxygen, temperature and conductivity, pH and flow data; makes preliminary field sampling decisions and corrections as needed.</p> <p>Supervises entry level Wastewater Technicians in all phases of their work.</p> <p>Collects samples from waste treatment facilities and records reading of flow rates for use in flow compositing samples.</p> <p>Operates and calibrates sampling equipment, flow measuring devices and other field equipment.</p> <p>Performs basic maintenance and necessary repairs to field equipment such as automated samplers, conductivity meters, pH meters and flow meters, conducts inventory checks and orders new or replacement equipment and supplies as needed.</p> <p>Maintains records in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.</p> <p>Reads sewer plans and physically examines the sewer to confirm its course and destination.</p> <p>Locates sources of incompatible discharge (oil, industrial toxic waste, etc.) into the public sewer system.</p> <p>Enters field records and information into computers, and provides summary reports to engineering staff.</p> <p>Ensures that all qualitative analyses and quality control requirements are met.</p> <p>Assists engineering personnel with industrial plant inspections.</p> <p>Supervises the operation of the waste hauler control facility.</p> <p>Develops weekly work and personnel schedules.</p> <p>Trains assigned staff on safety related matters and procedures.</p> <p>FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS</p> <p>Good knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures and methods common to sampling, measuring and analyzing wastewater samples.</p> <p>Good knowledge of procedures and safety precautions in the collection and preservation of representative samples.</p> <p>Working knowledge of the principles and techniques of supervision.</p> <p>Ability to make arithmetic computations.</p> <p>Ability to operate and maintain all equipment used in wastewater and ambient water related sampling.</p> <p>Ability to record and maintain sample collection data and sampling results.</p> <p>Ability to recognize substandard samples, (such as, oily, odored, or discolored) and report this to the supervisor.</p> <p>Ability to communicate effectively in order to obtain necessary information regarding sample collection sites.</p> <p>Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.</p> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>Promotion:</p> <p>One (1) year of permanent competitive class status in the title of Wastewater Technician I.</p> <ul> <li>2- 61810 </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, Cont.</p> <p>Open-Competitive:</p> <p>A. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a baccalaureate degree in natural science or chemical, civil, sanitary or environmental engineering; or,</p> <p>B. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an associate's degree in Engineering Science, Public Health Technology, Environmental Health Technology, Water and Waste Water Technology Option of Science Laboratory Technology, Water Resources Option of Civil Engineering Technology or Natural Science (biology, chemistry or physics) and two (2) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in water or wastewater analysis, control, treatment, or sampling, or natural science (biology, chemistry or physics); or,</p> <p>C. Four (4) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in natural science (biology, chemistry or physics); or,</p> <p>D. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C).</p> <p>SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT</p> <p>When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid New York State CDL or Non-CDL, including any special endorsements, as required for the type of vehicle being operated.</p> <p>1/2011 Revised</p>
