Learn more about us at worcester.edu/about .</p> <p>Job Description: OFFICIAL TITLE: Campus Police Officer III- Sergeant SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Chain of command/Captains/Chief of University Police/ Deputy Chief of Police/ Detective Sergeant SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Subordinate personnel including Officers, Security, Dispatchers, students, and interns, as assigned</p> <p>General Statement of Duties : Patrol campus buildings, grounds and adjacent areas of the College; enforce State laws as well as the rules and regulations of the college; deliver confidential/sensitive material; perform related work required. Investigate criminal acts such as sexual assaults, armed robberies and property crimes such as burglaries. Collect and use forensic evidence to solve crimes. Interview informants, suspects, and witnesses to ascertain alibis, clues, time frames, and possible suspects.</p> <p>Responsibilities:</p> <p>(E) = Essential</p> <p>(E) Conduct and manage follow ups/ investigations/ background checks. (E) Understand, draft, and execute all types of warrants. (E) Conduct surveillance and undercover duties, as needed. (E) Responsible for conducting comprehensive investigations. (E) Responsible for conducting crime scene management. (E) Prepares written reports of investigation(s) and maintains accurate records. (E) Administers the RAVE emergency alert system. (E) Responsible for apprehending law- breakers and follow cases through to prosecution. (E) Patrols the buildings and grounds of the university on foot, bicycle, or vehicle to ensure the security of buildings and grounds, and to guard against trespass, theft, damage to property, fire, and injury. (E) Engages with the university community and performs the job with a community policing mindset. (E) Enforces traffic and safety regulations, state laws, and policies of the university; refers disciplinary matters to the student judicial process; restrains or arrests suspects when necessary. (E) Identifies criminal offenders and criminal activity, and where appropriate, apprehends offenders and participates in subsequent court proceedings. (E) Facilitates the movement of people and activities. (E) Creates and maintains a feeling of security in the community; promotes and preserves civil order; keeps a visible presence throughout campus, on grounds and in buildings to promote community. (E) Serves as a first responder to emergencies on campus and acts appropriately. (E) Accurately and objectively documents call response and writes reports accordingly. (E) Serves as an essential employee, responds to inclement weather and emergency situations, as assigned. (E) Provides training to police, security, and dispatch employees, as assigned. (E) Serves as a back-up for dispatch and covers dispatch, as assigned. (E) Works overtime and external details, when available and/or as assigned. (E) Maintains a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, as well as university regulations and procedures. (E) Satisfactorily maintains credentials and licenses necessary to perform the work of a campus police officer. (E) Follows the rules and regulations of the department and university. (E) Serves on university committees, as assigned. (E) Demonstrates civility and professional, customer-service oriented behavior, worthy of emulation by other staff and students. (E) Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan. (E) Responsible for contributing to Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action objectives. Performs other duties as assigned within the Campus Police Officer classification</p> <p>Classification specifications are available at http://www.mass.edu/foradmin/humanresources/classspecshrd.asp</p> <p>Requirements: Required Qualifications:</p> <p>Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in a governmental police force or in law enforcement work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.</p> <p>Substitutions:</p> <p>An Associate's degree with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.<em> A Bachelor's degree or higher, with a major in police science, law enforcement, or criminal justice, may be substituted for the required experience.</em></p> <ul> <li>Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge of the principles and correct usage of the English language including grammar, punctuation and spelling. Knowledge of police procedures, practices, and fire prevention methods. Knowledge of law of arrest and criminal procedures in lower courts. Knowledge of guarding procedures. Ability to maintain student discipline, deal with the public, recognize fire hazards and to walk long hours alone, indoors and out, under varying climatic conditions. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Appointees must be eligible for appointment as required by the MPTC and POST, must undergo an extensive background investigation and CORI Check.</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications:</p> <p>Bachelor's Degree with a major in Criminal Justice. Minimum of 1-year full-time experience as a detective. Minimum of 4-years consecutive campus law enforcement or municipal police background. Active Certification as a Police Officer under MPTC guidelines. 40-hour MPTC basic detective training course. Interview/ Interrogation courses.
