<p>Job Description</p> <p>The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City's evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, visitors, volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7500 diverse professionals and knowledge experts.</p> <p>The Facility Maintenance and Repair Division (FMRD) seeks to recruit a High Pressure Plant Tender (HPPT). Under direct supervision, the selected candidate will be responsible for but not limited to:</p> <ul> <li>Tends oil, gas or coal fired high-pressure boilers, incinerator furnaces and related equipment, and assists in the maintenance and repair of this equipment; </li><li>May be assigned to inspect, maintain and repair heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and related auxiliary systems and equipment; </li><li>Hand fires high-pressure boilers using solid fuels, and stoker equipment and incinerator furnaces using burnable refuse. Cleans fires; </li><li>Tends and operates stoker equipment, oil-, gas-, or coal-fired high-pressure boilers and incinerator furnaces, and related equipment; </li><li>Maintains, cleans, repairs and assists in the inspection and testing of high-pressure boilers, incinerators, auxiliaries and related equipment; </li><li>Maintains, cleans, repairs and/or tends to, and assists in the inspection and testing of equipment and systems used in heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and related auxiliary equipment, such as cooling towers, air handlers, chilled water pumps, air cleaners and filters, fans, heat exchangers, tubes, air treatment assemblies, humidifiers/dehumidifiers, and controls; </li><li>May dismantle and/or assemble equipment associated with heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and mechanical systems to make it operational; </li><li>Requisitions parts as required; </li><li>May operate a motor vehicle; </li><li>Performs related work. </li></ul> <p>HIGH PRESSURE PLANT TENDER - 91650</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <ol> <li> <p>Two years of full-time satisfactory experience within the last ten years operating and maintaining high pressure boilers or the equivalent marine experience; or</p> </li><li> <p>Not less than one year of experience as described in "1" above plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational high school.</p> </li></ol> <p>55a Program</p> <p>This position is also open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a Program.
