<p>Position: Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired</p> <p>Reports To: Director of Related Services, Office for Exceptional Children</p> <p>Salary Schedule / Grade: Refer to Dayton Educational Interpreter Association Salary Schedule</p> <p>F.L.S.A Status: Non-exempt</p> <p>SUMMARY</p> <p>Under general supervision of the Director of Related Services, Interpreters assist in instruction for and interpret spoken information to hearing impaired students during the school day in academic and extracurricular activities. Interpreters are also responsible for voicing for students when necessary. All important aspects of this work are subject to detailed and specific procedures.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</p> <ul> <li>Interprets instructional information in all subject areas from spoken English into sign language. </li><li>Interprets instructional information for resource classes and extracurricular activities into sign language. </li><li>Interprets classroom and school building procedures into sign language. </li><li>Interprets for students in communication with other students and with school personnel. </li><li>Interprets directions for classroom and standardized assessments. </li><li>Instructs deaf/hard of hearing students, teachers, and other staff members on how to correctly use an interpreter. </li><li>Discourages inappropriate dependencies within the interpreter/deaf student relationship. </li><li>Observes and reports learning behaviors of students. </li><li>Performs related work as assigned. </li></ul> <p>QUALIFICATIONS</p> <ul> <li>Competency in English, American Sign Language (ASL), and Signing Exact English (SEE) </li><li>Associate degree from an accredited Interpreter Training Program </li><li>Valid Ohio Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired license </li><li>National certification by Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf (RID) or National Association of the Deaf (NAD) desirable </li></ul> <p>PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDS</p> <ul> <li>Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, stoop, and climb stairs </li><li>Occasionally lift and/or move lightweight items up to 40 lbs. </li></ul> <p>WORK ENVIRONMENT</p> <ul> <li>Work is performed in a general school setting </li><li>Work involves risk of repetitive motion syndromes to hands, wrists, arms, back, and/or neck. </li><li>Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue </li><li>Periodic travel for meetings, professional development activities, and work assignments </li></ul> <p>The Dayton Public School District provides equal educational and employment opportunities for all people without regard to race, gender, ethnicity, color, age, disability, religion, national origin, creed, sexual orientation, or affiliation with a union or professional organization.</p>
