Summer Associate-Distribution Support Summer Food Service

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) works to reduce food insecurity among children and youth in Muskogee by providing free, nutritious meals during the summer months when school-based meal programs are unavailable. Many participating families face economic hardship and rely on school meals as a primary source of daily nutrition. Without access to these meals, children are at increased risk of hunger, which can negatively impact health, development, and academic outcomes. The SFSP provides free meals to children in low-income areas through eligible organizations, primarily during the summer when most schools are closed. Administered by USDA's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), SFSP operates at sites such as schools, parks, community centers, and other locations where children gather. Sites qualify to offer free meals if they are located in areas where at least 50 percent of children come from households at or below 185 percent of the Federal poverty level, or if at least half of participating children meet this income threshold. Operating from a central kitchen at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, this program prepares and distributes meals to multiple community sites, ensuring consistent access for youth in underserved areas. By increasing access to healthy food, SFSP reduces the burden on low-income families, supports child well-being, and contributes to improved educational outcomes and long-term economic stability.
