<p>POSITION: Automotive Fleet Technician</p> <p>DIVISION: Administration</p> <p>DEPARTMENT: Fleet Services</p> <p>UNION/GRADE: Unit 2/Grade 17</p> <p>BASIC PURPOSE:</p> <p>Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on various types of MWRA vehicles and equipment in a manner, which ensures quality, safety, and proper working order to minimize down time and maximize productivity.</p> <p>SUPERVISION RECEIVED:</p> <p>Works under the general supervision of the Automotive Fleet Foreman.</p> <p>SUPERVISION EXERCISED:</p> <p>May provide direction to Co-op students and Assistant Automotive Technician in Training,</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <ul> <li>Inspects vehicles and equipment to locate trouble and determine repair needs. Recommends repairs to Automotive Fleet Foreman. </li><li>Adjusts repair and/or overhaul air conditioner systems, brakes, electrical systems, spring & suspension components, steering and front-end components, ignition systems, hydraulic PTO systems and valves, generators, compressors and trailers. Replaces damaged/defective parts. </li><li>Diagnoses vehicle/equipment problems including diesel engines, transmissions, electric and hybrid propulsion systems, and makes necessary repairs. </li><li>Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on various vehicles and equipment to ensure quality, safety and proper working order. </li><li>Greases and changes oil. Hydraulic fluids and coolants on a scheduled basis according to approved procedures and as directed by the Vehicle Services Supervisor or Automotive Fleet Foreman. </li><li>Performs general and complex repairs on heavy-duty trucks and special equipment. </li><li>Responds to road calls and refueling situations. Makes necessary repairs either on the road or in the garage. </li><li>Performs safety checks to ensure the ability of vehicles and equipment to pass a Massachusetts Safety Inspection. </li><li>Enters manually or by computer, tasks and parts used on work orders along with diagnostic findings. Works closely with supervisor/foreman to ensure accuracy of work order information. </li><li>Operates repair equipment such as but not limited to strut machine, tire machine, wheel balancing machine, acetylene and oxygen torch, welder, and computerized and electrical diagnostic tools. </li><li>Operates department tow vehicles and transports vehicles/equipment from site to site, to/from vendors and from field locations. </li><li>Recommends needed supplies. </li></ul> <p>SECONDARY DUTIES:</p> <ul> <li>Performs related duties as required. </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>Education and Experience:</p> <ul> <li>A high school education or the equivalent; and </li><li>At least four years of experience in repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment including experience as a vocational/technical student; or </li><li>Any equivalent combination of education training and or experience. </li></ul> <p>Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:</p> <ul> <li>Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, materials, and practices used in repairing, rebuilding, and adjusting gasoline, electric and diesel powered vehicles and equipment. </li><li>Considerable knowledge of computerized and electrical diagnostic tools such as but not limited to Autel MAX System, Snap-on scanners, and computer based diagnostic software such as J-Pro. </li><li>Demonstrated skill in use of tools and equipment employed in automotive repairs, such as strut machine, tire machine wheel balancing machine, acetylene & oxygen torch Welder. </li><li>Experience with the operation of tow and ramp trucks. </li><li>Ability to maintain current licenses listed below. </li><li>Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. </li><li>Necessary reading, writing, mathematical and scientific skills and demonstrated written and oral communication skills. </li></ul> <p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Valid Massachusetts Class B Commercial Drivers License.</p> <p>A Massachusetts Hoisting Operator's License (1C).</p> <p>Clean Air Act section 609, motor vehicle air conditioning technician certification, by an EPA approved trainer.</p> <p>TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:</p> <p>Mobile and portable radios; hand-held, motorized, and pneumatic tools; copy and fax machines; hand-held and desktop computer; diagnostic; forklifts and other material-handling equipment.</p> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS:</p> <p>The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.</p> <p>WORK ENVIRONMENT:</p> <p>The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.</p> <p>While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.
